Musical kick

robanybody has got me in a musical mood with her posts about Gene and Judy and Fred, so I thought I'd share one of my faves, from 1953's The Band Wagon:

This number illustrates what made Fred Astaire great - his ability to dance to almost anything. By '53, the muscular style of Gene Kelly and choreographers like Michael Kidd was prevalent, and you would think that the more classically graceful Astaire would have been left in the dust, but in this number you see that he takes that more blatantly sexual postwar style and masters it. Add in Cyd Charisse and you get magic.

And what the hell, here's

This is one of my favourite supporting actresses in musicals, Dolores Gray. I utterly love her in It's Always Fair Weather and this song is fantastic, written by André Previn, Betty Comden and Adolph Green. The intro bit includes some of the movie's wonderful skewering of the early television industry, too:
