Summary : Making promises is a good thing. But, what if keeping them becomes impossible?
He had a grin plastered on his face. He was walking in the streets, looking very stupid with a smile which never disappeared one second, after he left a shop. He was carrying a red box with yellow ribbons. That was the reason of his grin. He just kept staring at it, as if there was nothing else in the world. He even bumped onto some people during the process, but he did not care . What mattered was that he was going to see the person he cherished the most, to give him that gift. The latter was meaningful because it would seal their relationship forever. At least that was how Ryosuke saw it. Plus, he did not choose it randomly : it was a silver pendant with the letters "Y" and "C". The two of them were stuck together kind of stylishly and Ryosuke ordered it a while ago already. He just picked it up though, because it was a special day.
He was talking with Yuri around one hour ago and had to lie to pick up the pendant, saying he needed to buy some stuff for tonight's dinner. The chibi did not show any sign of suspicion, he actually looked too exhausted to do so. He even fell asleep just when Ryosuke left. He did not have any distinct symptoms during his stay at the hospital, like the chest pain he sometimes had- when the older was absent obviously. But Ryosuke knew about them thanks to Daiki and Yuya.
The only obvious symptom Yuri was showing was tiredness. Except for that, he would look totally okay. However, as time passed by, it seemed like his energy was gradually leaving his body. The black haired boy did tried his best to hide it, through his smile and laugh, yet it was far from being enough. Yabu sensei also told him he really needed to rest a lot, thus it was not a secret for anyone.
The jewellery shop was quite far from the hospital, so it would take Ryosuke at least 45 minutes of walk to get back there. He was not worrying though. Daiki had told him that he would visit Yuri at that time, so the chubby cheeked boy was relieved. Consequently, his walking pace was just normal, the usual one, opposed to his excitement, which was clearly shown on his face. What kind of face will Yuri make when he will see the pendant? Ryosuke was pretty sure it was going to be unique. Will Yuri like i--
His phone's ringtone interrupted his chain of thoughts. The brown haired boy put the box in his pocket to take his mobile instead.
"Yama-chan..."
Daiki's crying voice made him stop walking to concentrate fully on the conversation.
"Chii.. Chii... H-his heart... And this time, i-it might b-be..."
His voice became hoarse. He was stuttering all the time and he sounded like he did not want to finish his sentence. Plus, his words were quite incoherent. Ryosuke could understand if that was what he was thinking about.
"I'll be there, as soon as I can." He said, gathering as much composure as he could, despite his inner turmoil.
Then, he pushed the red button and put the phone in his pocket again, before he began to run as if his life was depending on this. Well, it literally was. It was concerning Yuri after all. But... No, it could not possibly be... The end. He had to make it, before... Before... Putting all his negative thoughts away, Ryosuke forced himself to think about nothing else but Yuri's wellbeing.
He was going to give him that pendant anyway. Perhaps that would put a wide smile on the black haired boy's face, a smile which Ryosuke felt like he had not seen in ages. Maybe it would also help him to recover faster. The mental had as much importance as the physical condition, after all.
Why did Ryosuke become a doctor in the first place? To find a cure for Yuri's illness, right? So, his whole life would be meaningless if he did not achieve this precise goal. There was no way he could let that happen. No failure would be allowed.
His own self was divided into two parts : the positive one and the negative one. On one hand, he was persuaded that Yuri was going to go through this, that it was not as serious as Daiki made it sounded like and he would be able to see his smiling face again. On the other, he thought Yuri's condition had not been that critical before and he feared that the pendant will be left untouched, because he might not be there on time.
Although Ryosuke wanted to believe that the first solution was the right one, he knew that he was too powerless to have any effect on fate. Destiny could not be controlled. Doctors cannot make miracles happen.
His ribbing was hurting because of his running, yet stopping was out of the question. He was also running out of breathe, but was it comparable to what Yuri was going through? The chubby cheeked boy did not think so. He was willing to do anything for his little angel. Even if he was not really tough, he ran with all his might, not caring about how tired he was going to be.
While his brain was looking over all the possibilities, without realizing it, he already arrived at the indicated place. He had been so much preoccupied with Yuri's health status that it kept him busy during the whole route. It was enough to make his brain think for 30 minutes, the time it took to get back to the hospital. It was the shortest he was able to do.
Once he passed the hospital's main door, he immediately headed towards the stairs. The elevator did not even cross his mind, knowing too many people used it. Thus, climbing up the stairs was the fastest way to reach Yuri's room. It was situated at the far end of the fourth floor.
As soon as he arrived there, he pushed the door with so much strength that it bumped the wall. But he could not care less that time. All the persons present in the room had their glance turn to look at Ryosuke, breathing hard due to his recent effort. All of them, except for one... The brown haired boy felt pitiful starings on him and he disliked that feeling.
Then, he directed his gaze to the only person who was not disturbed by the noise he made. He rather looked like he was sleeping peacefully. Ryosuke looked at the heart monitor for a few seconds, noticing the lack of numbers and movement, then glanced back at the young boy lying on the bed. He slowly approached the bed, with his brown orbs always focused on the motionless person. Yabu sensei put one of his hands on Ryosuke's shoulder, as to comfort him. The latter turned his face in order to see the experienced doctor's apologizing expression, before he left the room. After that, Ryosuke noticed Yuya was also there, yet he was speechless. He had that look that said "If there's anything I can do, you can ask me.". The younger assumed Yuya perfectly knew, as much as himself, that nothing could be done for the time being. That's why, it was his turn to leave, not long after Yabu sensei.
The only one left was also the one who called Ryosuke, to inform him of the situation. His brown eyes were clearly swollen, showing that he had cried a lot. He looked like he could weep again anytime, but maybe he already shed too many tears. That's why they would not come out anymore. That was not Ryosuke's case though, since he did not shed any tears yet. Nevertheless, deep inside, he refused to believe what his eyes showed him...
"Dai-chan... When?" He asked in a soft voice, not looking at the older but at the unconscious boy.
As for Daiki, he was gazing at the chubby cheeked boy's back when he said :
"Five minutes before you arrived." He paused for a bit. "A team of talented doctors, including Yabu sensei, did their best to keep him alive.. to no avail. I'm sorry, Yama-chan..."
"Why are you apologizing?" Ryosuke cut him coldly.
Hearing his friend's apologize just made him feel like crying.
"There was nothing you could do. None of us could.. not even me." He added in a whisper.
As far as his lover was concerned, he hated having to admit how helpless he was. No choice was proposed to him though, there was "Face reality" and nothing else.
A tear escaped from one of his eyes. It was the first one he shed for that day. It was then followed by a vale of tears. That was not surprising, considering that he contained his true feelings for a while. It was not a problem to show his true self to Daiki though, they had been friends for years and he trusted him. Ryosuke collapsed next to the bed. He was then sitting on his knees, with his arms crossed on the chibi's bed. He kept wetting the blanket with his tears, hiding his face at the same time. The sound of his sobs was deadened by the thick fabric.
"I'm sorry... I'm so sorry, Yuri... I wasn't able to keep my promise."
He raised his head to look at Yuri, still sobbing. Then, he took the box from his pocket and put it on the bed. He undid the ribbons as fast as he could, opening the box, to reveal the silver pendant.
"I wasn't even able to make it on time.. to give you your present. I'm the worst, aren't I?"
Ryosuke took the necklace off the box in order to put it around Yuri's neck, without fastening it.
"It suits you so perfectly." He told him, smiling.
Even if he knew perfectly well that Yuri could not hear him. Somehow, he still felt the need to talk to him. He brought the necklace to his own neck and fastened it this time.
"I'll wear it, okay? I believe that in this way, we'll always be connected. You'll always be beside me, through this necklace."
He confidently justified the fact that he was going to wear the necklace, instead of the black haired boy, whom he bought it for. He grabbed Yuri's right hand, holding it tightly with both of his hands.
"There is one promise I won't ever break..."
Daiki, who stayed silent and unmoving, looked curiously at Ryosuke, wondering what he meant.
"I'll be forever by your side. No matter what happens, you'll always be the one and only one for me. And nothing is going to change that... So, please watch over me while you're in heaven, okay?"
The older boy thought he did not have the right to interfere when Ryosuke was talking to his little angel. He was also scared he might be bothering, but he could not get himself to leave the room, seeing the chubby cheeked boy crying so much. Thus, he simply remained there. However, he noticed that after Ryosuke finished talking, the younger shed some more tears.
Finally, Daiki walked towards him, crouching to be at his height. He put an arm around Ryosuke's neck from behind, to let him know that he has a friend that will always be there for him.
Yuri might have forgotten about it, but Ryosuke did not. He supposed Daiki told him when he was still awake, and Ryosuke was outside. The latter planned to wish it to him, while giving him the necklace. Yet, his plan failed... Even though it did, that changed nothing to the fact that it was a special day for him. The day his destined person was born.
"Happy birthday Yuri."
