Summary : Making promises is a good thing. But, what if keeping them becomes impossible?

It was not that late (compared to when Ryosuke stayed until midnight or one in the morning at the hospital) yet, night was approaching. If it was not for Yuri, he probably would have stayed a bit longer. There was no time to be wasted. He ran in direction of his home, the chibi was waiting for him there. Not exactly at his home, but there was a nice place, with some benches, that bestowed an incredibly beautiful sight of the river that crossed the whole town. The sky was tainted with pretty purple and orange shades that night, which were reflected on the river. The whole landscape was mind-blowing.

Ryosuke wished he could gaze at it with his little angel, all the night as if there was no tomorrow. Unfortunately, they could not. Yuri was admiring the sight until the brown haired boy arrived to the meeting place. Admiring the landscape together was not a part of their plans that day, but maybe, hopefully, it will be someday. No, if Ryosuke stormed off the hospital, dead worried, to join Yuri as fast as possible, it was for a much more serious thing.

Effectively, apart from the older's footsteps before he stopped running, the only sound that would be heard (if that was possible) at that place were Yuri's sobs. It did not make any difference to Ryosuke though, whether there was a sound or not. The latter struggled hard to prevent himself from bursting into tears. He could not put up with his boyfriend crying, yet he had to stay strong since he was the one who had to protect Yuri. He was the one who had to comfort him when he was hurt. He was the one who had to wipe Yuri's tears. No one could do it, except for him.

Thus, he slowly walked towards the bench where Yuri was waiting for him. Once he reached it, he lovingly embraced his boyfriend from behind. The chibi probably did not realize Ryosuke was there, due to his sobbing. However, now he could not ignore it since he could feel the older's warmth on his body. Ryosuke also rested his head on Yuri's shoulder and whispered in his ear :

"I'm here now."

Yuri jumped a bit from the sudden whisper and butterflies started growing in his stomach. The chubby cheeked boy could not see it because he was not facing Yuri, and there was not enough light either. He simply felt it. Sometimes, words were not needed, eye contact either. The both of them were connected by a much stronger and special bond, born from their love. Their heads were pressed against each other's, so Ryosuke sensed Yuri's little nod. Did he stop crying? At least, his sobs seemed to have stopped. That was reassuring the brown haired boy a bit. Just a bit. It was not enough. He still ignored the source of the problem. Yuri's sudden call, thinking he could speak again.. all of these were mysterious, and Ryosuke was unable to pin point what the issue was.

He loosened his hold on the chibi and moved from his place to join Yuri on the bench. His puffy eyes were still red due to the recent tears, which were stopped by Ryosuke. There was no doubt about the fact that there was something else. His tears might have stopped flowing, but the anxiousness in the chibi's eyes was not gone. He was pretending to blankly stare somewhere around the river. Unfortunately for him, Ryosuke was not fooled that easily : he was completely aware that a lot of things, even more than he thought, were crossing Yuri's mind. The older boy delicately put his hand on the other's, as a way to let him know he was not alone.

"Tell me what's troubling you, dear." He said in the most gentle manner possible.

The black haired boy moved Ryosuke's hand away, without being rude, and stood up, still facing the landscape. Ryosuke, who remained on the bench, just looked up at him curiously. All he had to do now was to wait patiently for his boyfriend to admit what was on his mind. He was going to do it, Ryosuke was certain about that. No need to insist. Yuri's silence and lack of moves meant everything. At least, to Ryosuke it did. It was as if he had known him forever. The chibi bit his lower lip before turning to face the older.

The first thing he confessed was that he did not know what Ryosuke and him were anymore. Ryosuke was taken aback by his explanation, he failed to comprehend its meaning. His head was moving randomly, his eyes blinking, his mouth half-opened; all the typical reactions of someone confused. When he somehow managed to become stable, it was his turn to stand up to be at Yuri's height.

"What is that supposed to mean?" A failed-to-be-reassuring and actually anxious smile lasted a few seconds on Ryosuke's face, after he questioned the younger.

The latter looked up to the sky for some time. If he had not gotten some drops on his face, the taller boy would not have known the reason. It was at first a light rain. Alas, as time was passing, it turned into a driving rain. They could not care less though. Not wasting time, they rapidly came back to their own business. Being rain-soaked did not matter.

Yuri started his explanation saying that the only thing he had ever needed in his life was to have "Yama-chan", by his side. He thought he could overcome anything : not being able to speak, his illness, being different from others; everything as long as the older boy was there. He wanted to live a normal life, with Ryosuke, exactly like what other couples did. Sharing their stories, talking about what they did during the day, watching dramas and movies together, taking a walk in a park; all those simple things that any couple can do. Yuri wanted them to be the same.

Ever since that incident, I tried persuading myself that it wouldn't make any difference but.. But...

Yuri's hands kept moving for a moment that seemed like forever to Ryosuke, until he found himself unable to continue. Despite the fact that the rain drops were mixing with his tears, the brown haired boy still noticed them. That explained the abrupt stop in his speech. As for Ryosuke, no notable reaction could be seen. His eyes were looking straight at Yuri. Their target did not change even once. Yuri obviously did not finish talking, but he desperately tried to make his eyes stop crying. It was useless though. Because the more he wiped his tears, the more numerous they were. Ryosuke's heart was hurting at the sight of his little angel crying. Yet, given the evident inner turmoil Yuri was living, he could at least put up with this pain for a while. It was so little, compared to what the chibi had been through. Ryosuke needed to know what Yuri wanted to say eventually. The end of his confession, he wanted to hear it so badly. And it seemed like Yuri read his thoughts.

We are just a doctor and a patient, aren't we?

He continued, talking about the day he stayed over at Ryosuke's house. They never had time to watch the drama Yuri rented, so he would have to give it back soon. He took a deep breath, shedding more tears as he prepared himself to say the next thing.

If it stays that way, I'll keep getting hurt, and eventually you'll be hurt too.

Tell me, honestly...

What am I to you, Yama-chan?

His words, his tears, his stare pleading for an answer.. Ryosuke felt totally weak against them. He could only stay silent.
