It nags at the back of her mind as he gives the world the smile they want to see… The bright young racing star that blew the world away with the win of the century.

They don’t notice his eyes scanning the crowd intently, desperately, searching for the one thing the win couldn’t give him. They don’t see loneliness taking hold of him as he realizes that it’s never been about winning. That he’s still standing there… alone… the same lonely child he’s been since that stormy night so many years ago when he lost what mattered to him most.

She’s sees him… and she knows. She watches him leave the stage and her heart aches because she cannot help him.

She sneaks into the locker room… too late to hear what lead up to it… but she watches him reach back and throw everything he has into the punch and the man in the suit does nothing to stop it. Blood trickles freely from his lip and he does nothing.

It doesn’t take much for her to realize the man in the suit is X unmasked. Mostly it’s the way Speed is looking at him. A mix of love and hatred and jealousy and fear that leaves her cold inside.

“I’ve tried so hard. I can’t do this alone anymore… I need you.” His voice is raw and echoes with a ghostly softness through the locker room.

“We can never live for the past, Speed.” His voice is cold, but not without a hint of sympathy.

There was a pause… a moment in which it seemed as if the entire world had stopped, shattered as Speed hauls back and punches him again. She flinches when he doesn’t move again… taking the blows as if he deserves them.

“You KNOW that’s not what I mean! I want to live for NOW! If you still care at all… please…” Speed pleads… and they stare at one another. Tensions and feelings she can’t even begin to comprehend hanging in the air like a wet blanket. Speed blinks away his tears, his body shaking visibly as he tries to punch X again but it’s much weaker this time and X catches his wrist easily and pulls Speed to him.

“Please… Rex, help me.” Speed looks up and the mood between them changes. There is a tenderness in X’s eyes and for a instant she swears he looks familiar. There is a presence there that she feels ashamed for witnessing… Something deeper than any relationship she’s ever known. They move closer together and she almost averts her eyes out of respect but she stops just as they do. Speed’s eyes are closed and his body slides into X’s lifelessly and he holds him tight, kissing the top of his head before picking him up and laying him out on the bench.

He smiles gently, brushing Speed’s hair from his eyes before turning his attention to the door.

“He’s exhausted. He overexerted himself. I’m surprised you don’t watch over him more closely.” He walks towards her and speaks with a slight amusement in his voice and she cringes, he knew she’d been there the entire time.

She stands and watches him blankly as he comes to stand beside her.

“I’ve been watching for years. The only thing closer to him in this entire world is his own blood.” There was a slight sharpness to her voice as she moved from her hiding spot and walked over to where Speed laid and placed her hand on his cheek and bent down, kissing his forehead.

She wasn’t surprised to look up and see him gone. As angry as she wanted to be and for as much as she wanted to run after him she could only stare at the door with a heavy heart. She looked back at Speed, a sad smile coming to her lips.

“I’ll never be what he needs.” She whispers to nothing

‘But I’ll be whatever he wants.’ She thinks to herself.
