That's pretty clever, hey?
1.WHAT DID YOU DO IN 2010 THAT YOU'D NEVER DONE BEFORE?
You know what, I am not even writing that list out this year; it would be all right if I was, like, 16, but given that I am in fact 22 it is moreso just embarrassing.
2. DID YOU KEEP YOUR NEW YEARS' RESOLUTIONS, AND WILL YOU MAKE MORE FOR NEXT YEAR?
I made some resolutions for, like, the school year. I think they were along the lines of "chill the fuck out, try kissing some boys, maybe it will work out if less of your friends are boys." So I guess those have gone well enough.
3. DID ANYONE CLOSE TO YOU GIVE BIRTH?
No.
4. DID ANYONE CLOSE TO YOU DIE?
No.
5. WHAT COUNTRIES DID YOU VISIT?
THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
6. WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO HAVE IN 2011 THAT YOU LACKED IN 2010?
My friends to be in the country?
7. WHAT DATES FROM 2010 WILL REMAIN ETCHED UPON YOUR MEMORY AND WHY?
St Patrick's Day. Probably the worst day of my life.
8. WHAT WAS YOUR BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENT OF THE YEAR?
I finished a thesis and graduated?
9. WHAT WAS YOUR BIGGEST FAILURE?
Who knows.
10. DID YOU SUFFER ILLNESS OR INJURY?
Not that I remember. Well, I did cut my finger really badly and now I can't feel anything on that side of my finger, I guess that was pretty metal.
11. WHAT WAS THE BEST THING YOU BOUGHT?
Lots of sweet concert tickets.
12. WHOSE BEHAVIOUR MERITED CELEBRATION?
My friends are all pretty great.
13. WHOSE BEHAVIOUR MADE YOU APPALLED AND DEPRESSED?
MY OWN.
14. WHERE DID MOST OF YOUR MONEY GO?
I repeat from last year: "Tuition. Rent. Stella's. Beer."
15. WHAT DID YOU GET REALLY, REALLY, REALLY EXCITED ABOUT?
THE NATIONAL. Chicago. Arcade Fire. Mostly just music. Also I am really excited about my trip in February.
16. WHAT SONG WILL ALWAYS REMIND YOU OF 2010?
Oh, so many. Anything from High Violet and The Suburbs, especially.
17. COMPARED TO THIS TIME LAST YEAR ARE YOU:
i. HAPPIER OR SADDER? So much happier.
ii. THINNER OR FATTER? Who knows, probably fatter, I am not cycling this winter.
iii. RICHER OR POORER? Richer, in fact!
18. WHAT DO YOU WISH YOU'D DONE MORE OF?
Can't think of anything. Maybe I could have gone to more parties, but I haven't felt like it.
19. WHAT DO YOU WISH YOU'D DONE LESS OF?
Being an asshole?
20. HOW WILL YOU BE SPENDING CHRISTMAS?
I spent it briefly at home.
21. DID YOU FALL IN LOVE IN 2010?
Ha... no.
22. HOW MANY ONE-NIGHT STANDS?
No.
23. WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE TV PROGRAM?
MAD MEN. We also enjoyed the first few seasons of Weeds this summer. What else did I watch... Jeeves and Wooster, Planet Earth, Sex and the City...
24. DO YOU HATE ANYONE NOW THAT YOU DIDN'T HATE LAST YEAR?
Kind of the opposite actually, I have come to be pretty good friends with some people I didn't like much last year.
25. WHAT WAS THE BEST BOOK YOU READ?
The Name of the Rose, fo sho. Also on the list would be, in reverse order I guess, Snow by Orhan Pamuk, The Unbearable Lightness of Being by Milan Kundera, Disgrace by J.M. Coetzee, The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy, Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides, A Complicated Kindness by Miriam Toews.
26. WHAT WAS YOUR GREATEST MUSICAL DISCOVERY?
I did only start listening to Spoon this year; also, like, The Tallest Man On Earth, She & Him, have been really enjoying Titus Andronicus (because how can you not?), I'm sure I'm forgetting about so many others.
27. WHAT DID YOU WANT AND GET?
To see some of my favourite bands-- The National, Arcade Fire, The Mountain Goats. Seriously, so awesome.
28. WHAT DID YOU WANT AND NOT GET?
Can we have a question that is the opposite of this one? Because honestly, the last few years I have been lying and not saying "a relationship" like I wanted to, and now that that is a distinct possibility, boy do I ever not want it.
29. WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE FILM OF THE YEAR?
Man, I see so many movies all the time, I can't even remember all of them. Mel and I went to see Black Swan a couple weeks ago, it was pretty fuckin hardcore.
30. WHAT DID YOU DO ON YOUR BIRTHDAY, AND HOW OLD WERE YOU?
Sat around in the back yard at Furby house, had a fire, drank beer, smoked cigarettes, ate an ice cream cake that said "I'm bringing sexy bear." It was a pretty freakin nice time.
31.WHAT ONE THING WOULD HAVE MADE YOUR YEAR IMMEASURABLY MORE SATISFYING?
Maybe if all of my friends hadn't abandoned me that would have been nice. Also if I had spent less time being psycho that would have been nice.
32. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONAL FASHION CONCEPT IN 2010?
Oh I am a total hipster... but, you know, I try to keep it "ready at any moment to be at a sweet rock concert" hipster rather than any of the other varieties of hipster. I got kickass new glasses.
33. WHAT KEPT YOU SANE?
My friends who I love.
34. WHICH CELEBRITY/PUBLIC FIGURE DID YOU FANCY THE MOST?
... next. But I mean, any lead singer of any band I like. Freakin John Darnielle! Boy do I ever love that man.
35. WHAT POLITICAL ISSUE STIRRED YOU THE MOST?
I have been trying to be more political... but still I do not know the answer to this question.
36. WHO DID YOU MISS?
EVERYONE.
37. WHO WAS THE BEST NEW PERSON YOU MET?
Believe it or not, I only met Peter this year, which seems outrageous.
38. TELL US A VALUABLE LIFE LESSON YOU LEARNED IN 2010:
Just because you've forgiven someone doesn't mean it doesn't keep hurting. Just because you've been rejected doesn't mean that person stops being awesome. Feelings are fuckin stupid.
39. QUOTE A SONG LYRIC THAT SUMS UP YOUR YEAR.
Today I really enjoyed Titus Andronicus' expressive use of "Christ, fuck me," from some song, probably all of them. Simple, yet elegant. Also like the entire first half of Lust for Life ("I wish I had a boyfriend/I wish I had a loving man in my life... I wish I had a suntan/I wish I had a pizza and a bottle of wine.") The Tallest Man On Earth: "... because you named me as your lover/When I thought I could be anything." Also these, from my sticky note of song lyrics I like:
I got two sets of headphones, I miss you like hell.
You know you have a permanent piece of my medium-sized American heart...
The National
God doesn't always have the best God-damned plans, does he?
Wolf Parade
Heaven is a place where you can never find your cigarettes.
The Hold Steady
But the winner, doubtlessly, is from Arcade Fire, City With No Children: "Never trust a millionaire who'll quote the Sermon on the Mount/I used to think I was not like them, but I'm beginning to have my doubts/My doubts about it."
