My So-Called Life

Season 1 Episode 20

“Confessions”

Scene 7

Int. Restaurant Space

Hallie and Graham are sitting in the dining room. They are working, papers are spread out everywhere. Hallie is talking while gesticulating wildly. Graham is listening, and drinking a glass of wine. There is a basket filled with assorted breads on the table as well.

Hallie: (takes a sip of wine) OK. Marketing update.  So we have purchased three print advertisements. One in the Three Rivers Way, one in the Pittsburgh Gazette and one in University of St. John Sentinel.  The Three Rivers Way ad runs for the next two weekends up until opening week. The Gazette is a daily. That one runs Thursday through Sunday for the two weeks leading up to the opening. (Graham is pretending to listen) Then, we have the soft opening in one week. We will open for dinner on Thursday evening. I’ve also got a street publicity campaign in the works. I plan to flood the parked cars at the local school and shopping malls.  (Takes a bite of bread)

Graham: (not listening to her, out loud) Good. That reminds me, I’ve got to contact our produce distributor. We’ve got to make sure they are prepared for our demands.

Hallie: And then there’s the play, Opening Night! The students aren’t really our market, but we’ll have free coffee post performance.  With a dessert buffet.  It’ll be a smash. We’ll have advertisements all over the school, all over the community. That will get the buzz going.

Graham: And I’ve got to check on the linen order. Wasn’t it supposed to arrive today? And darn it, I double checked the invoice for the coffee delivery, and they overcharged us.  Did they think I wouldn’t notice?

Hallie: Oh my god. You just reminded me that I need to proof the menu again.

Graham: This is just so much fun.

Hallie: We need a name.

Graham: Yes, you are right about that. So do you have any ideas? I know you’ve given it some thought, and I’ve got some ideas too.

Hallie: OK, yes, let’s hear your ideas Graham.

Graham: Well, I was thinking that the name should really convey what our restaurant is all about. Our restaurant is about food. Unique food.

Hallie: (nodding her head, nibbling on bread) Uh huh.

Graham: How about Chase’s Place?

Hallie: I like it. At first I was thinking something really generic, like Ciao or Chez Bella, or something like that. But you’re absolutely right. We want to stand out. It’s nothing if not unique.

Graham: The glass shipment arrives tomorrow.

Hallie: I’ve got a meeting with the city tomorrow about the liquor license. (looks at Graham) Are we insane?

Graham: (laughs out loud, reaches for a piece of bread) Absolutely.

Ext. Chase House

Jordan is at the front door. Danielle answers.

Danielle: (brightly) Hi. Who are you?

Jordan: (awkwardly) Uh. Hi. Is Angela home?

Danielle: Are you Jordan Catalano?

Jordan: Uh Yeah. So is Angela home?

Patty approaches the door.

Jordan: Uh, Hi Mrs. Chase.

Patty: Danielle, don’t just keep standing there, let Jordan into the house. Go and tell your sister that he’s here. Come in Jordan. How are you? Is Angela expecting you?

Danielle gives a withering glance to Jordan, then to her mother, turns, and heads up the stairs. Jordan awkwardly shifts his weight back and forth. He is obviously uncomfortable.

Jordan: Uh, no. I mean. I think she’ll be OK about it…but I can leave though, if she’s busy.

Patty: (prodding) Uh huh. Well follow me. (She heads towards the kitchen)

Jordan: (awkwardly) Uh I was….in the neighborhood.  I just need to…talk to her for a second…see if she needs a ride to school tomorrow.

Patty: (smiling) Oh. Well that’s awfully nice. Can I get you anything to drink or eat? Perhaps you’d like some milk? How about a sandwich?

Jordan: (politely) Oh, no thanks, I’m OK.

Patty: Well, she’ll be down in a minute. Why don’t you come into the kitchen and sit down. I’m just finishing up here.

Jordan: (relaxing, leaning against the kitchen counter) So...is Mr. Chase home?

Patty: (tsks, and presses her lips together) No. He is out. He and this Hallie Lowenthal person are opening a restaurant together. He is very busy with that.

Jordan: Oh. So what’s the restaurant?

Patty: Well, it doesn’t really have a name right now. You know, it’s kind of, between names right now I guess.

Jordan: (nods his head) Yeah. I know how that feels.

Int. Chase House, Kitchen

Angela: (happily smiling) Jordan! Hey! What are you doing here, I mean, I’m glad you’re here. Don’t you ever call?

Jordan: (straightens up and takes a step towards her). Oh, well, sorry. I was just over at Brain’s real quick and thought I’d stop by to see if you wanted a ride to school tomorrow, or whatever.

Angela: (twirls her hands in front of her chest) Oh, well, yes, I mean, that would be great!

Jordan: Oh yeah, and I made a CD for you, of that song I’ve been working on. Do you have a player…?

Patty: Sure, in the living room! Danielle, turn off the TV so we can listen to Jordan’s song.

Danielle: Mom! But I’m watching Party of Five!

Jordan: It’s OK, Mrs. Chase. (Turns to Angela) Do you have one…

Angela: In my room! Of course. Mom, we’re going to, I mean, can we just go…

Patty: (Rolls the tip of her tongue to her top teeth and inhales slowly). Yes. Ok. Yes. But *keep the door open*. (She turns away and goes back to the dishes in the sink).

Angela: Thanks mom.

Angela grabs Jordan’s hand and pulls him up the stairs to her room, and almost shuts the door before Jordan stops her.

Jordan: So where’s your CD player?

Angela: On top of the dresser. (Points)

Jordan moves over to the dresser, and stops just short of it and turns to come back to the window. He looks at the white lace curtains that are open. He stares out the window into the front yard. He can clearly see Brian’s house across the street.

Jordan: So this is your room. (Looks around) Nice. So, how long have you lived here?

Angela: What? Uhh…. we’ve lived here my whole…..life. Don’t you want to use the CD player?

Jordan: Yeah in a minute. Just wait. Do you always leave the curtains open?

Angela: (stops, the question has startled her) Well, when it’s nice. I mean, I try to remember to close them, but sometimes I forget. When I leave them open, from here on the bed I can see the stars.

Jordan: (stares at her) Yeah. (He looks around the room again, as if picturing himself lying on the bed looking up at the stars, and he smiles)

(In deep thought, there is a long pause). Ok, well, maybe you should think about getting some blinds. I mean, something to shield the view, but still allow in some light. (He examines the window. Angela is looking at him in curious amazement). Then you could just raise and lower the blinds when you want to look out. Like, from the bed even. You wouldn’t even need to get up. I could install it, if you want.

Angela: (With eyebrows raised) Uhh. Cool. That’s a good idea. Thanks.

Jordan: So anyway, I’ll leave this for you. Let me know what you think. I’ll see you tomorrow morning, all right?

Angela: (shyly) Hold on! Jordan. (Stepping towards him)

Jordan: (softly) Yeah?

Angela lunges forward. She grasps onto the edges of his jacket with both hands and pulls him to her. His dark hair falls over his eyes. He closes the distance between them and cups his hand under her chin.  Slowly, sweetly, their lips touch and a soft, sensual kiss ensues. His hand slides behind her neck to bring her closer, while his other hand gently increases its pressure at her waist. She takes the last step forward to be completely within the circle of his arms. He draws her to him. Their bodies melt together as they collide. The kiss becomes hungry, and as it grows in passion, Jordan abruptly stops the kiss and gently puts some distance between them.

Jordan: (Clears his throat. Rests his forehead on hers) OK. Angela...I…. (Struggles to find words)

Angela: Shhh. We’ve talked enough for one night.  (Smiling)

They stand, embracing in her bedroom in front of the window. The shot pulls back out the window to the street, pulling back slowly to frame the Chase house, with a red convertible parked on the street out front.
