I devour story. TV series, Books, Comics, Movies, Song. All of these are encompassed in pop culture. So in turn I love pop culture. My love and concern is not for the world but this country I make my home. The best way for me as a follower of christ is live my life in a way to reflect him. I don’t know what exactly I am going to do. But I do know ( Read more... )

I appreciate this monologue, Dan. As a Christian, I, too, feel the tension between Christian organizations and the secular media. I come from a family with a very media-conservative mother and a somewhat more lax father, so I have Dad putting on the Blues Brothers while Mom is leaning over the back of the couch and telling us how ungodly it is every time someone curses. Needless to say, it's nice to hear the opinion of a fellow Christian who is actively involved in the industry. I often struggle with knowing how much to stand up for the ideals of the Christian faith and how much to let people live their lives, and, as you said, demonstrate Christ through his work in my own life.

I'm reminded of Christ's tactics by your view on this. Christ didn't come in and bash all the sinners for what they were doing wrong. Instead, he saw the worth of the individual, loved that person, THEN told him or her to go and sin no more. With the secular media, I think that a lot of Christians hone in on how many swear words a movie has, how violent it is, or if there are gays in it, and then they miss the entire context of the movie. While the Bible calls us to fill our minds with good, pure, and lovely things, at the same time, we cannot live in a bubble. The truth is that the world is corrupt and evil. Not every movie can be a Disney movie. Movies that portray real life are going to have things in them that are corrupt and evil...it's just a matter of whether the movie glorifies corruption or instead reaches for a higher goal: love, valor, friendship, or sacrifice for the good of others. To me, this should be the object of the Christian movie-goer: does the film ultimately depict something that is pleasing to God?
