Under Cover

Her slender fingers gently stroke the spine of the tome she holds in her hands. She can smell the scent of recycled air
still clinging to it's pages, reminding her of who and what she used to be. Life was simpler then.
She can hear his low rumble as she reads the intimate words he has left inside the cover. The sound of someone
passing through the tent flap snaps her out of her revery.
“You find anything?”
“No.”
“People are gathering outside, they're getting restless. They're looking for their leader.”
“Just a teacher now.”
“Who are you kidding?”
She shrugs.
“What's that?”
“This,” she says waving the book in his direction, “some cheesy mystery novel.”
His eyes scan the cramped living space. As he moves to begin his own search she reaches for his arm to stop him.
“Don't bother, there's nothing here.”
She whispers as if praying to the sky above, “Don't worry I've still got your back Old Man.”
“What?”
“I said, let's go before things get out of hand.”
Replacing the book under the pillow, Boomer turns to follow Doral out of the tent.
