Making a promise is actually a scary thing to do.
That’s why he never made one. He knows that in the end, no one’s going to fulfill their promises.
That’s also why she never believed one. She knows that believing a promise leads to disappointment, leads to a broken heart.
They’re not best friends. or even friends. They’re just two individuals who goes to the same school, and apparently have the same thinking.

There’s this party everybody is going to.

Loud music, the smell of alcohol, people making out, and people doing stupid things. Hyomin prefers to stay outside, with a cocktail in her hand, stares blankly at her surroundings. Until she heard a girl yelling, and crying. She’s not paying attention to what they’re saying. She just snorts, thinking how stupid couples are.

After the girl left, the guy takes out his cigarette and smokes. Hyomin peeks at him, it’s Junhyung, and apparently he’s looking at her too.
Their eyes meet, cliché. But nothing happens, there’s no sparks or rapid heart beat or whatsoever. It’s sort of awkward tho.

Then he walks towards her.

“Hope you don’t mind if I smoke here”, he says.

“That’s not a question so I guess I don’t have to answer it. But, go ahead, it’s not like I’m a saint girl who can’t stand smoke”, she answers.

He smiles, “Great. It’s better to have someone near you than being completely alone, you know.”

She smiles back, but not answering. She’s always awkward when she’s with new people, well he’s not new, but still.

“You’ve been here the whole time?” he asks.

She nods.

“So did you hear what happened earlier?”

“…Yeah. Sorry”, she finally talks.

He snorts. “Being in a relationship is ridiculous, don’t you think? Like, why bother being in a commitment with one person when in the end all you have is yourself.”

“But, I thought she’s your girlfriend?”

“Nah, she’s the one exaggerating it. Do I look like the type to have a girlfriend?”

“Obviously not, to be honest.” she says. They laugh.

“Well, looks like we have the same way of thinking.”

They become friends ever since. Friends with benefits, you can say. Friends who flirt. Friends who are, like, glued to each other. From sophomore until senior year. People starts to wonder if they actually have some feelings to each other. Their friends always say about them getting hurt in the end. But, heck, they’re not fragile. They don’t even seem to care about what they are.

They plan to go on a trip together after graduation. To be free, to have fun, before the real life starts. (Because the real life starts after you leave high school, that’s what their parents always say.)

“Ok it settles then, promise you won’t forget!” she says, with this huge smile on her face, looking so excited.

“I won’t”, he smiles. He’s never been this sincere before.

And so two people who once said they don’t believe in promises, unconsciously promise to each other.

She waits at the station.

He’s not late, it’s just that she’s always ahead of schedule. She buys some snacks at the convenience store at the station, and searches for something to read at the book store.

In the mean time, he’s also on his way to the station, looking so excited. But then he sees someone. Someone who he doesn’t want to see again.

“I swear I never wanted us to break up. Did you know I was sorry?” Hara asks.

“I didn’t,” he spats.

“Would you have cared if you did?”

“I wouldn’t. Look, I never asked you to be my girlfriend, it never happened, ok-“

She kisses him. He doesn’t kiss her back.

“Look, you can call me all you want, but I love you. I know you don’t love me back, but, please, give it a time. Give me a chance.”

He may be a jerk, but he’s not a bad guy. He won’t leave a girl who’s begging for him to love her back in the street alone. So he walks her home.

He then texts someone.

“I’m sorry.”

And so he’s the one who broke the promise.

She just finished her book searching when she gets the message. Her eyes are red and watery. She’s trying so hard not to let the tears falling.

It’s not the waiting that kills her, it’s that even without an explanation, she knows he will never come.

And so she’s the one who gets a broken heart.

Years have passed.

She still looks the same. Tall and slender, her hair is shorter, tho. Except she wears a ring on her finger now.

She’s a successful fashion designer, she got what she wanted all along. She just got back from America for a week. A week full of jet lag, that’s why she haven’t got the chance to walk around the neighbourhood.

Lots of things changed. Most of the places she used to go to aren’t there anymore.
But not this nice and small café that has the best caramel macchiato (in her opinion) she often went to. With him.

She smiles, and enters the café. Atleast I found something that hasn’t changed a lot since I left, she thinks. She orders a caramel macchiato and a chocolate soufflé. And then sits at the place she usually sat on.

“One coke and a chocolate soufflé, please”, someone orders.

She feels like her heartbeat stops for awhile. A familiar voice, which she misses a lot more than anything. A voice that she’s been dying to hear for a long time. A familiar order, too.

She turns her head slowly, finding a pair of familiar eyes looking at her.

“H.. Hyomin, you’re back?”

They sit facing each other. She has a lot of things to ask, to confess, and just.. talk. She tries to spit them all out, but words keep falling apart in her mouth like spent gum.

After a long time of silence, “When did you get back?” Junhyung opens the conversation.

“Not long. A few days, a week, I don’t know.” she answers, while eating her soufflé, not daring to see him in the eye.

“Oh, I see. What brings you here?”

She stays silent, not sure how to answer the question.

“Hmm?”

“To get my parents’ permission”, she answers shortly.

“For wh-“

Before he could finish his sentence, he sees that thing on her finger. A beautiful and shining thing. A diamond. A ring.

He tries his best to put a sincere smile on his face, “Congratulations.”

It was on that day he learned that there are some things you can’t hold in your hands.
It was on that day he realized the true meaning of “It hurts but it may be the only way.”

She’s the first person who makes him think that maybe a promise is not a scary thing.
Because of her, he made his first promise.
Because of her, he tried so hard to fulfill a promise.
Because of her, he knew that life is not about how to not get hurt.

She is a bittersweet goodbye.
