[Mello's heartbeat freezes in his chest for a split second. The L from the world he knows is a fake, a murdering bastard who killed the true L - his mentor, his aspiration, his objective. His first instinct, then, in dealing with whoever is on the other line, is to suspect him as working with that L - in short, regard him as a foe. Still, he's careful not to give anything away in his tone as he replies:]

[Beyond is oblivious to the fact that Light acts as L. He knows Light, he's sure he is that... "Kira" or whatever L called him, but he works on limited information according to what L told him when Light was here... Anyway, now again he has to think. If he only could remember voices better... It was so long ago that he heard Mello's... However. He was willing to play with the fire. It was what he always did. Just be smart, Beyond, be smart, this place has made you much too weak.]

[There's a longer pause here than what's technically necessary as Mello recovers from the small shock of hearing that name. He knows the story of Beyond Birthday, after all, and he knows L had taken on the alias as he own after B's ultimate failure. This person had claimed to be acquainted with L, almost like a boast. Not even Kira knew that whole story of the LABB murder incident. There's one obvious conclusion to draw here, but, Mello's brain argues, it's not possible. B's been dead for years.]

Hm. You wouldn't happen to have worked in Los Angeles, would you?
