Tenure, academic careers, gender roles and children
I realized something being back at Knox and seeing male professors with their children throwing fits - I don't think any of us thought twice about our Straight White Male Professors excusing themselves from a scientific discussion to take care of a screaming kid. The kid is screaming, of course their parent has to do something, something being calm the kid down. The kid doesn't care about data, and shouldn't expected to be. The parent's job is to be there for the kid, and them being a professor doesn't change that. I don't think any of us saw a conflict in being a scientist one moment, to become a parent the next. Once again, in light of later life experiences, Knox is a very special place.
