It's time to renew the grant. John sent out a rough draft for us to review, and I found the following:
"Six students, including one woman, are currently working toward their Ph.D. degrees under the auspices of this project."
So I'm a woman, so I'm special. Am I a charity case or something? We're more likely to get funding if we mention my gender?
I really don't know how I feel about that. Very mixed feelings. I do believe women and minorities need more support than white, domestic men, but... do I really want to be "the woman"? No, I don't, I want to be the competent scientist/businesswoman/whatever.
Is this positive support or hidden sexism? I don't know. If anybody has opinions, you're welcome to comment.
