That perfectly describes how I was too. That's why I didn't bother getting into Tool until around 1998. All of the preppie kids whom I despised were walking around with NIN and TOOL shirts in high school, and I guess I had to have time to disassociate the bands with that image before I could appreciate them. KMFDM still rules NIN's roost, though. You'd probably like NIHIL and ANGST, for a good starting point.
While you're downloading NIN, don't forget to look for the remake of "Reptile" called "Reptilian." It's like "Reptile" - one of my favorites because it's just this massive wall of sound - taken to the extreme.
