I like to do things a little differently

In Colorado the other week, I was having some intense emotions, and I got in my crappy little rental car and went for a drive. I heard two NIN songs on the radio. I had a craving for NIN. So I went to Borders, no kidding, to buy Pretty Hate Machine to chill to in my hotel room. Of course, they didn't carry it. Then Ministy's "Jesus Built My ( Read more... )

My parents wouldn't let me have The Downward Spiral when I was younger. Something about, "I want to fuck you like an animal" just didn't strike them as suitable for their little boy. But I managed to talk them into letting me get Pretty Hate Machine which really is, by all accounts, an awesome album.

Ha. I think the sentiments on every single song on Pretty Hate Machine are way more fucked up and disturbing than "fuck you like an animal."

"I was never a huge NIN fan in high school, mostly because I hated anything everyone else liked, and that included being able to find "freak" music that was still too mainstream for me."

That perfectly describes how I was too. That's why I didn't bother getting into Tool until around 1998. All of the preppie kids whom I despised were walking around with NIN and TOOL shirts in high school, and I guess I had to have time to disassociate the bands with that image before I could appreciate them. KMFDM still rules NIN's roost, though. You'd probably like NIHIL and ANGST, for a good starting point.

While you're downloading NIN, don't forget to look for the remake of "Reptile" called "Reptilian." It's like "Reptile" - one of my favorites because it's just this massive wall of sound - taken to the extreme.

TDS came out when you were in high school?

That makes you at least ten years younger than I thought you were...

Pretty Hate Machine came out my senior year in college. sigh.

I was born in 1980. I'm 25. :) A baby. Even among my friends, I've long been the youngest. No one has taken my place yet, except temporarily, only to move away from the area.
