I've been running with a club for over a year now. They're quite a nice bunch. Have a look at the link to Penny Lane Striders in my Links. To be honest I get my motivation more by having a structured plan than having people with whom I can hang around, however it is very good to also be able to get together with others on those days when you don't want to get out of bed or off the couch.

I very much like my own company, so I can take or leave the group. That said, I've hooked up with a couple of people who train pretty much at my pace, and I find training with them enormous fun. I think that has actually made quite a difference in my motivation and improvement, despite my protestations, LOL!

I think that if motivation is an issue for you, joining a group will help - I find that once I've agreed to do something with someone else it's much harder to back out of it - but you have to make sure you join a group suited to your fitness and ability. I'd never join a "proper" athletics club because I'm only doing this for a laugh. A social club is the best place for me.

Thank you for the thoughtful reply - Penny Lane Strider seem like a great group of people. I think finding people who are at my level of ability might be good for me, though like you I do enjoy my own company too.
