well, now that that's done

due to peer pressure from my brother, we watched the lord of the rings series this weekend. yawn. i was never in love with the books, but that makes sense because i only gave the hobbit a bit of effort 15 years ago. even though i love the medieval stuff, i'm just not into elves and whatnot.

but anyways, the movies were fine, i guess. of course the landscape is beautiful, and there are some really amazingly filmed and lit shots. viggo mortensen was amazing, as always. i was pretty impressed with orlando bloom, actually. of course there are some scenes where his movements are computer-aided, but there are many where he moves in such a way as to suggest he only weighs about 50 pounds, namely the scenes where he, aragorn, and gimli are running across the mountains. he has remarkable control over his body there. also, anytime he gets off a horse, he never bounces. classy. the amateur linguist in me also appreciated the random elvish, as well.

on the whole, though, if i had had something better to do, i feel i would have wasted those 12 hours of my life. i don't really feel enriched having seen this. as i didn't have a tie to the books, the ability of the films to hold my attention was slim, and the story is too complex and confusing unless you already know it. on the other hand, huzzah to the studio for blowing shitloads of time and money on a movie that, at first glance, has a limited audience.
