It's hard to believe that I've been producing my podcast, the New York / New England Regional EDM Showcase, for six years already! I was inspired to create it by a few things, most notably another podcast out of the University of New Hampshire called Trancelab with Lord Bass. The two-hour show was broadcast from the school's radio station and then put on the web weekly and I became completely hooked as soon as I discovered it. So when the magazine Electronic Musician did a cover feature about the new sensation which was podcasting in December 2005, complete with instructions on how to get started, it seemed like the natural thing to do. Especially since no one I knew locally within the electronic music scene had done so. This was my chance to break brand-new ground!
So the podcast was born. I selected one track per edition that was produced by an independent unsigned musician within the upstate New York and western New England region and gave a short spoken-word intro and outro. There were eleven editions by April of 2006 when I decided to change the format to short DJ mixes featuring a roundup of tracks I'd amassed from around the web. In order to find enough material to fill an entire mix I had to expand my geographical range beyond the Northeast though I decided to keep the name of the podcast the same. The format featured roughly a half hour of music using a Creative Commons license to get around the legal difficulties of transmitting music over the web. Each edition featured a different style of electronic music.
I'm proud to say that this pioneering venture continues to this day and I'm pleased to release the thirteenth edition of the Commute-Size Mixes series. And for the first time, I have included some of my own material within the mix. I cross back and forth between drum&bass and dubstep in this half hour mix; the perfect length for your commute!
