A Meme of Her Own Making

Happy New Year, friends and listers!

I felt like posting about the new Sherlock, but I haven't actually watched it yet - I'm struck in that awkward rut where you REALLY WANT TO WATCH but also don't want to ruin a moderately good thing.

So, instead, I've been making a list of 15 Favourite Characters Ever and let me tell you, it was very harrrrd. ( Read more... )

... and LJ ate my other comment too. Ah well, it was too rambly anyway.

Okay. So, Ron. His heroism is basically all about emotions. Not that he doesn't also save the world by rescuing Cattermoles and playing chess. Not that it's not his war - oh god, it definitely is. (I always feel weird when fans say it was Hermione's war more than his. Sure, he had the Pureblood privilege to choose which side he was on, or to try and remain neutral. But he chose, accepting the full consequences of fighting it. Having had a choice doesn't make it any less his fight. Especially since he, too, is also fighting to protect his family.)

But still. His Crowning Moments of Awesome - also, incidentally, the books' Crowning Moments, though I am a bit biased - are offering his life to save Harry from a psychopathic Animagus, and riskng his like to save Harry from Death By Stupid. Without him saving Harry, there would have been no great victory. But also, without him, there would have been no Harry-as-we-know-him. We'd just have yet another abused Half-blood dark-haired orphan on our hands. But it was Ron who gave Harry his first real tie - his truest tie - to the magical world, and was the one to offer solace and unconditional friendship after a lifetime of abuse. (Also, snark and perspective and jealousy, things making it impossible for Harry to believe his own hype, which, also a good thing.)
