A Meme of Her Own Making

Happy New Year, friends and listers!

I felt like posting about the new Sherlock, but I haven't actually watched it yet - I'm struck in that awkward rut where you REALLY WANT TO WATCH but also don't want to ruin a moderately good thing.

So, instead, I've been making a list of 15 Favourite Characters Ever and let me tell you, it was very harrrrd. ( Read more... )

YES Kitten the Boys' Club. I loved the bonding, I loved the cluelessness. Cotillion has a similar, but more equal hero-heroine dynamic, though, sadly, not quite as much boy-bonding.

Okay, so, the Duke of Sale, known as Gilly to his uncle and My Little One to his cousin, with whom he has a most delightful relationship of swapping horror stories and basically playing up the adorable little brotherness. Gilly's book isn't really a romance, though he gets an awesome wife, it's a coming-of-age story, which usually makes me RUN FOR THE HILLS, because I just don't like the idea of boys having to Toughen Up and Lose Their Childish Ways which usually means becoming bossy dicks.

But with Gilly, it doesn't mean that. His main falling is his kindness, and it's also his greatest strength - basically, he takes in all the strays, and makes everyone around him a little kinder. And his adventures don't teach him not to take in strays, they teach him to be awesome enough to be able to help them all - and he is. He does.

Kindness is the biggest aphrodisiac for me, and Gilly's brimming with it. He's also brimming with this weirdness - he's not quite comfortable with his title and his riches, but BY GUM he takes the noblesse oblige part of being noble seriously.

Also, the book is brimming with OT3 and is just warm and delightful and makes you roll around with quiet hilarity.

I will have to check this one out then. He sounds lovely. I'm sure that we have the book somewhere on a shelf, probably much loved and falling apart, but that is the sign of a good book after all.

Another thing I like about Friday's Child is dear, sensible Isabella, who rejects our hero at the beginning of the book and continues on in that fairly awesome vain. I also love that Hero and Sherry are both absolutely dreadful at keeping house and saving money.

I feel I might have to do this meme, although I'm afraid that as soon as I try to actually think of favourites they vanish from my head. There would have to be some Potter and Disc characters in there...
