Happy New Year, friends and listers!

I felt like posting about the new Sherlock, but I haven't actually watched it yet - I'm struck in that awkward rut where you REALLY WANT TO WATCH but also don't want to ruin a moderately good thing.

So, instead, I've been making a list of 15 Favourite Characters Ever and let me tell you, it was very harrrrd.

AS YOU KNOW BOB,

Comrade Psmith is the finest specimen of posh Communist English boy one ever did see. He's universal - like, you can shove him basically anywhere and he'll be unchanged [and in conclusion, do you think we could get a Cold War America AU with him? NOT THAT I'M OFFERING. Cold War America is beyond my skillset and also it'd be creepy BUT SO INTERESTING] - but he's also internally consistent and he's like a superhero who's supposed to be a caricature but isn't. Like, he doesn't have a heroic side, he's all homogenously a hero, like, simultaneously larger than life and a delicate wilting lily who has actual emotions, like pride and sympathy and loneliness. I still haven't read Leave it to Psmith - the internet has failed me tragically - but I know Psmith can indeed fall in love. Basically, he's my favourite for, like, a very specific brand of very sarcastic, non-violent awesome (with a killer fashion sense, mais oui, and infinite amounts of self-irony) (with a neck like a llama) that ought to be trademarked.

yessssssssss. the weird thing is, you keep expecting him to turn out to be the caricature - and yet he proves now and again that he isn't. he's not the conman, he's genuine, and it's weird and startling and kind of the best wish-fullfillment fantasy ever.

(and his vocabulary is a thing to love)

Okay, so, you watched the S2 ep, tell me, on a scale of one to gaytease, how much will it make me rage?

I really don't know.

Its the sort of thing where, it is perfectly possible to take everything at face value and really appreciate it as queer text of a sort. But on the other hand, when taken in the context of things like this quote... could just be taken as more gay tease.

also, what on earth is 'a certain age' in this context? 13 and naive? 50 and repressed? what?

As for these fabulous people. I pick: Most Noble Adolphus Gillespie Vernon Ware, Duke of Sale - The Foundling, by Georgette Heyer

I'm not as much of a fan of Georgette Heyer as my mum and sister, so I haven't read this book, but do please tell me all about him.

My personal favourite is 'Friday's Child', maybe not the most feisty heroine, but boy is she and the boys adorable and mostly clueless.

YES Kitten the Boys' Club. I loved the bonding, I loved the cluelessness. Cotillion has a similar, but more equal hero-heroine dynamic, though, sadly, not quite as much boy-bonding

Leaving aside my grand overidentification with S7 Buffy - so overpressured but utterly, inevitably functional, like, basically, the pillar who mustn't crumble although the crap keeps piling on and on and on - I love her brain, her soul, I just, like, want her to keep living inside me and keeping me warm, and that sounded creepy, oops
