“We saved another seal. I say this calls for a celebration.” Dean couldn’t help but grin, finally feeling as if the tide was turning in their favor.

“Do not become overconfident,” Castiel warned mildly.

“Don’t harsh on my squee, Cas,” Dean chuckled.

Castiel looked exasperated but Dean could tell he wasn’t really annoyed. After all, he’d gotten pretty good at pushing the angel’s buttons.

“Still, New York, we should go clubbing,” Dean said with a hint of a leer.

“Clubbing?”

“Yeah, pick up hot chicks. Drag Sammy along and watch him make bitch faces, it’ll be fun.”

Castiel expression pretty much said what he thought of that idea.

Dean feeling playful and high from having done such a frakin’ awesome job, pouted; more for show than anything else. “You’re no fun.”

Dean frowned. He could tell that Castiel was a million miles away, doing the freaky angel thing he did and that worried him.

“What’s wrong?” he asked, alert and ready, all hints of good humor gone.

“This way,” Castiel said, picking up the pace and leading Dean around a corner, down a darkened and dingy street.

Moments later, Dean saw her, a short figure in a puffy blue jacket, rushing down the street.

She stopped abruptly when she caught sight of them, eyes wide with fright and stance warily watched them while casting looks behind her.

“Hey, you okay?” Dean asked.

“Yeah,” the girl tried for cheery but instead it sounded desperate.

“You are not,” Castiel said firmly.

“God, I hope you guys aren't murderers, but no I’m really not fine. There was this guy following me all the way from work and I know it sounds paranoid but--”

“Can we walk you home?” Dean interrupted her high speed babble with a charming grin. “Wouldn’t want that creep to catch up with you.”

“I--” Clearly she wasn’t going to trust them. “I have pepper spray and I live just around the corner,” she warned looking like a determined little terrier with dorky braces.

Dean laughed. “Fair enough. I’m Dean this is Cast--uh Cas, who’re you and why are you walking alone this late?”

“I’m Betty, Betty Suarez. I got caught up in work,” she answered with a shrug. “You guys aren’t from around here, are you?”

Dean used his ‘aw, shucks’ face, happy to keep her attention from Castiel who was unnervingly silent, regarding them both intensely. “Nah, just visiting.”

“Umm…this is my apartment building. Thanks. You guys could come up, if you wanted. I have hot chocolate and gingerbread from a batch that my dad made for his gingerbread house, it’s really good--”

“Not so sure it’s smart to invite strange men into your apartment, Betty. But thanks anyway. Take care, okay?”

“Thanks, really. Happy Holidays!” she smiled, wide and bright and real before hurrying into her building.

“What was that?” he asked Castiel as soon as she was out of sight.

“That was simply a woman who needed help, Dean. One of God’s children who has faith and love and tries to do what is right and good. Is that not enough?” Castiel questioned.

“Yeah, I guess,” Dean acknowledged gruffly, realizing that he had seen all those things in Betty as soon as she smiled.
