Happy Birthday ficage for Fid!

Oct 15, 2008 07:15

A most happy birthday wish to my dear friend kilcarr ! I asked her for a drabble prompt about a month ago because I needed help resurrecting my muse.  It turned into a ficlet and I offer it up as a meager gift for one of the most fabulous, sweet and fascinating people I have ever met. The prompt was: General (thanks again for not asking for this one to be a ship fic!)/Ron and Ginny/A touching moment when a sibling lets the other know how they really feel about him/her. Thanks to ladytory for beta services rendered.  She is so the other half of my brain!

Oh and I lied about the Fiddy question.  I just  wanted to get the right name for this ficlet.  Forgive me in the name of love, Fid!

It was the very end of the harvest and the air was saturated with the scent of slightly overripe fruit. Ginny approached the bench on which Ron sat. Without a word, she grabbed an apple from a low hanging branch and made quick work of the treat that was still slightly warm from the late afternoon sun.

Once finished, she sat down next to her brother. Mutely, the pair stared straight ahead. By mutual unspoken agreement, the orchard behind the Burrow was where Weasley siblings arranged meetings to discuss serious topics. Ginny received her invitation via a twittering Pigwidgeon half an hour ago.

Although nearly dying of curiosity at what Ron could possibly want to chat about with her, Ginny followed the normal protocol of waiting for the summoning sibling to begin the conversation. When one of her brothers invited her to the orchard, she usually had somewhat of a clue as to why. This time, she had no idea what could be on Ron’s mind.

Just as she was about to break with tradition and speak, Ron cleared his throat and, continuing to stare straight ahead, said, “So, you and Harry, yeah?”

Ugh! She should have known. Of course Ron wanted to talk about her recent engagement to his best mate.   She answered with a curt, “Yes.”

“I guess I’m not surprised. Harry’s a great bloke.”

“Well, I certainly think so.”

Ron laughed, “I reckon you do. It’s just that…”

“Just what?”

Once again, there was an awkward silence. Ginny nervously brushed her hair back and her engagement ring sent a rainbow of flashes across the orchard. The tiny glittering sparkles seemed to spell Ron into speech.

“Ginny, I know Harry’s my best mate and all. But, you, you are my sister.”

“Spot on as usual, Ron.” Ginny retorted.

“Please. Let me finish, all right?”

“Sorry.”

“Anyhow, you are my sister and you should know that I would take up for you if there is ever a need. Not that there should be, Harry being a great guy and all. But, if he ever hurt you or anything, you need to know that he won’t live to see the next day.”

Silence once again overtook the pair as Ginny thought of what to say next. The minutes crept by. A crisp rustling sound interrupted the quiet. Ron was expressing his discomfort by kicking at the dried leaves under his feet.

“So, what you are saying is that you will kill the savior of the wizarding world if he makes me unhappy?”

Ginny saw Ron shrug out of the corner of her eye, “Er, yeah. That’s what I’m saying.”

“Thanks.”

“Sure.”

The two of them sat a while longer as the last rays of the sun faded from yellow to orange and to a deep red before falling behind the trees. When Ron stood up to head back to the house, Ginny grabbed his arm to stop him.

“What?” he asked.

Ginny smiled and said, "So, you and Hermione, yeah?"
