And yes, the second one is definitely darker; the red frame is darker. But you can barely tell cause her brown hair just makes it look like contrast; I had to put a piece of paper against the screen to actually see it.

grumblegrumblegrumble. I've made this stupid icon three times and it's still not right. I have nooooo idea why, either. And I'm far too anal to let it be, despite the fact that no one will ever use it. Whatever!

Perhaps it would be best to leave it until you can find a different software? Perhaps your original picture is darker? or if it isnt, maybe you can lighten it and the effects will cancel? That is enormously frustrating, regardless.
