I'd love to sleep through the morning with you, even if it means killing all the crows in the world.

Huzzah for literary translations of bad Japanese romantic poetry!

So I'm totally addicted to a new anime. I made the mistake of following a link from Topless Robot and ended up on Wikipedia reading up on the Bakumatsu and Meiji Japan, and then several hours passed. I'm not usually much of a history geek, but thanks to Rurouni Kenshin I can't get enough of Meiji Japan and the revolution and the Shinsengumi (SHINSENGUMMIES!!) and all that jazz. And of course there was an article on all of the anime and manga series that revolve around the Bakumatsu, so what do I end up spending my evening watching on Youtube? A really insane anime called 'Bakumatsu Kikansetsu Irohanihoheto', which isn't actually the longest titled anime I've watched (that honour still goes to 'Yami to Boushi to Hon no Tabibito', which took me nearly a week to remember).

Anyway, I don't think it has a very wide fanbase despite the subject matter, partly because you have to wait until episode five for anything to make sense. I just finished episode eight and I still don't really know what's going on. It's like a combination of 'Onmyoji' and the Kenshin OVA in that it's the Bakumatsu but with a crazyass demonic head of an evil prince who was executed centuries before but is still filled with immense rage and wants to destroy Japan. It's referred to as 'The Lord's Head' which is just weird and there's a stoic somewhat emo samurai whose mission is to destroy the head with his special Moontear Sword (I think) that basically has a magical homing device for the head hanging from the handle. And there's a troupe of actors who are trying to get revenge on this guy who apparently died ten years ago except clearly isn't dead and there's a pile of crazy political stuff because it is the Bakumatsu after all, and a turncoat bodyguard for the new leader of the Ishin Shishi (I think) who's half-English and blond and wears an eyepatch and is a perfect shot with his matching pistols. Who is clearly meant for the emo samurai. No srsly. There's this epic, drawn out fight sequence where they're trying to find each other in this enormous house and there's sooo much UST and SRSLY JUST MAKE OUT ALREADY.

But hilarious slash aside, it is filling my need for moar Bakumatsu/Meiji anime that doesn't crush my soul. I made the mistake of watching the Kenshin OVA last week which is titled 'Trust/Betrayal'. Yeah, you see where this is going. I cried through the whole thing and then for a good while afterward. And then I started crying a bit during this new anime because the emo samurai's adorable master is commenting on the vegetables they managed to grow in the garden at the dojo which made me think of Farmer Kenshin (which doesn't sound even remotely sad unless you've seen it, haha...) and I was lost. DAMN YOU WATSUKI-SENSEI! SHOUNEN SERIES MY ASS!

Anyway. There will be moar BKI watching tomorrow because it's awesome even if it makes no sense (and must watch the samurai/bodyguard relationship continue, muahahahahaha) and clearly I don't need to do things like laundry and dishes and whatnot. Pfft.
