Update, plus some Fridge Brilliance.

Still chugging along. Janette's gift is blocking downstairs and looks quite lovely. I haven't started Chris' though, because the needles are currently being used for Brian's Spiderman mittens. (Which are, incidentally, quite possibly the cutest damn things I've ever made. They would've been done yesterday, but I effed up the decreases. It's better now.) My grandpa's socks may not be done in time. I've accepted this; they were a last-minute idea anyway. And Carly's other gift would be done by now if I could find mum's @#!&)@ sewing machine.

Anyway. Fridge Logic is defined as that moment when that movie ends, you get up and head to the fridge for the drink of your choice, and it hits you - that maneuver/stunt/code/whatever wouldn't work in real life.

Fridge Brilliance is just the opposite - you get to the fridge, replay that scene in your mind, and the lightbulb of Oh, that was freaking BRILLIANT goes on. And I had one of those just a little while ago.

I was listening to Selah's Christmas CD, Rose of Bethlehem. Specifically, their rendition of "O Come, O Come Emmanuel", which is quite possibly my favorite song on the album. It's beautifully done, in a minor key with chords and terrific harmony. And all throughout it, there's this melancholy violin piece that plays in the interludes. It blends perfectly with the hymn, and it sounded familiar to me. Really familiar. Like, I've-played-this-in-band-before familiar. (Considering how long THAT'S been, I'm astounded I recognized it.)

So I was searching some old flute books and thinking, and then it hit me: That's "Hatikvah". As in, that's the song adopted in 1948 as the Israeli national anthem.

...Oh, that's brilliant. I mean, the hymn is about hope for a future, for salvation, for freedom. What better song to weave into it than "Hatikvah"?

Food for thought. I'm gonna try and finish this mitten before Brian gets home from school.
