Summary: How Black Cat meets the Magnificent Seven.

Chapter One

Train Heartnet rode into the small town of Four Corners on a black stallion he had acquired. He ignored the weary glances given to him as he rode slowly down the main street, before stopping his horse at the Sheriff’s office and dismounting. He tied the stallion to a nearby post before knocking on the door of the office. He could hear no movement from within, and as curiosity got the better of him, he opened the door and peeked inside.

“Hello?” Train called into the dark room. The two cells at the back of the room were empty. “Well, this is odd.” A hand tapped his shoulder and Train jumped into the office, his hand on the handle of his gun, Hades.

“Sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you.” A blonde woman looked up at him. Train smiled sheepishly at her. “But what are you doing?” she asked, wearily of the stranger.

“You didn’t scare me,” Train told her laughing falsely. “I was looking for the law in this town.” The woman looked questioningly at him.

“I’m sorry, but there is no law in this town. There hasn’t been for a while now.” Train crouched down on the floor and began to draw patterns in the dust on the floor, muttering under his breath.

Sven, Eve and Rinslet had been gone for a month and had missed the meeting time that they had agreed on. Train had telegraphed Annette to see if she could find anything out for him. It did not take her long until she found that Sven and the others had been caught up in some trouble in Four Corners. Judge Travis had sentenced them to hard labour. Then it hit Train. He stood up so suddenly that the woman almost fell backwards.

“Do you know where I can find Judge Travis?” he asked brightly.

“At the minute he’s travelling from town to town. He’ll be in Four Corners in about a week’s time, Mr….” Train smiled back at her.

“Heartnet, Train Heartnet.”

“My name is Mary Travis I run the Clarion newspaper here in town.” Train offered his hand to Mary and she accepted, she tried to hold back some of the surprise, as Train lightly kissed the back of her hand.

“It’s a pleasure to meet you. I don’t suppose you know of any jobs going here do you?” He asked, hoping beyond anything that she did. Mary looked thoughtful for a moment before replying.

“Ah, yes. The Seminole Chief was here yesterday looking for men to help save his village.” Train perked up. “I can give you directions if you like. It’s only a few hours ride a way.”

“I would be most appreciative of that Ma’am.” Mary nodded her head and walked back towards the newspaper office. Train followed her, after he shut the door to the office.

Her handwriting was neat, tidy and easy to read. Train was thankful for that because he really did not want to get lost again, as he had on the way here. He had rode for two solid days in the wrong direction, and only when he came across another town and ask for directions, did he realise that. He had also run out of money and had not eaten in a while. Sven dealt with their finances, Train just spent them.

Train took the directions and thanked Mary for all that she had done for him and rode out of town. It was not long until he saw the village.

“Rider coming in.” Vin called down from his look-out post. Chris looked up, shielding his eyes from the sun.

“Alone?”

“Look’s like.” Vin replied. The other seven gathered around Chris, hands on the handles of their guns. The Chief came forward as the stranger rode in. Train dismounted before the horse had fully stopped.

“Howdy!” Train called. “I’m looking for the Chief.” He looked around at the faces. Train could see from their stances that they were all ready to take him down if he made one wrong move.

“I am the Chief of this village.” The Chief told him. “What do you want?” Train’s faced brightened and his lips curled up into a big smile.

“I heard that you were looking for men to protect your village.” Train explained.

“And you came to offer your services?” Chris asked, uncertain as to whether or not the man was telling the truth.

“That’s right.” The Chief looked at Chris.

“You any good with that thing?” Chris asked, pointing to the gun at Train’s side.

“The best.” Train replied simply.

“Well, let’s have us a little competition then.” Buck chimed from behind Chris. Chris smiled.

“You up for that?” Train smiled, his eyes twinkling.

“Sure am.” He imitated.

“Vin, come down here.” Chris called up to the tracker on the ridge. Vin was down beside them within minutes. “You say you’re the best. Vin here is our best. You out shoot Vin and you can stay.”

“Agreed.” Train replied.

After a few minutes a target had been set up and the rules were explained to each of them. It was simple. All they had to do was fire two rounds into the target and see how well each other did. Vin went first using his shot gun. Both rounds hit the target in the centre. One shot was slightly up and to the right of the centre and the other was down and to the left. Train smiled as he took up position and fired his rounds. Both hit the middle dead centre. Train grinned behind him at the seven.

“Guess I’m staying then.” Train began to laugh at the looks on the seven’s faces. “Jeesh, don’t look so surprised would ya?” The Chief came up behind them.

“Thank you. We have very little to offer you except a bed and food.” Train perked up. The tiny bell around his neck jingled slightly.

“You have food! Where?” He asked impatiently.

“No need to get so excited about food brother.” Josiah told him. Train turned to him and within a moment had an arm hanging around Josiah’s neck.

“No need to get excited! I haven’t eaten in days.” Train explained.

“Well don’t get too excited brother. It’s only chilli and beans.” Josiah told him.

“Yeah, and Josiah cooked it.” Nathan chimed in. Train smiled at them.

“It’s food. I’m happy.” He said as they sat down to eat the meal.

“What’s your name anyway?” Chris asked, as the meal was dished out between them. Train blinked at them, almost as if he had forgotten his name.

“It’s Train Heartnet.” He replied with a huge grin. “Nice to meet ya.” Train held his hand out to Chris.

“I’m Chris Larabee. Guess you already know Vin and Josiah. This here is Buck, Nathan and JD. The one in the fancy suit over there is Ezra.”

“Nice to meet ya all.” Train called. Ezra looked up from the card trick he was showing the children and smiled slightly at the man. He sure was a weird one.

Throughout the meal all seven kept a keen eye on Train, watching his movements. Train managed to knock over several bottles of whisky. Fortunately for Train, they were already empty.

Damn kid’s an idiot. Buck thought to himself, as he watched Train swerve his fork around before putting it in his mouth. Chris was beginning to wish he had just told the kid to get lost. But then again, that had not stopped JD from staying.

Damn stupid kids. Why’d they want to die so young? Chris thought as he continued to watch Train and JD eat. After the meal, Train volunteered himself to wash the dishes.

“Just don’t break any of them.” Buck warned as he handed his plate to Train. Train smiled widely as he accepted the plates and began washing them. He earned more strange looks as he started to sing as he washed the dishes.

“We’re washing the dishes in cold water.

We’re washing the dishes in cold water.

The dishes are getting washed in cold water.

That’s not the way to go.

They should be washed in hot water.

They should be washed in hot water.

But there ain’t any hot water around.

So we’re washing the dishes in cold water.”

The song continued like this until Train was finished washing them and began to dry them. The seven men gathered around Chris, looking back at Train every now and then.

“Are you sure the shots weren’t flukes?” JD asked.

“The way Mr. Heartnet is acting does not correspond with the way he made those shots Mr. Larabee.” Ezra told them.

“He does seem a might strange.” Buck added.

“I know. But I made a deal with the kid, and now he’s staying. I just hope he does as he’s told.” Chris told them. Vin smirked.

“Think that’ll be a miracle.” With that Vin walked off and took his position back on the ridge.

Ok, I think I’ll leave it there for the first chapter. Don’t want them getting too long. *cough*
