How to revise a novel in one sitting

Oct 27, 2010 11:21

Forty-one chapters, 486 pages, 104k words. Okay, screw the read-through.

I'm so familiar with/tired of the story at this point that I either skim it too fast and miss the finer points that I'm looking for, or else I read so slow I might as well be revising it, which is the next phase anyway.

SO. New approach. I'm looking at the novel through a chapter-by-chapter synopsis that focuses specifically on the emotional content (cuz this is a chic story, and that's what counts). I already had most of it plotted, so it was just a matter of updating the recent changes and then really looking at how things progress. I managed this in one coffee-office sitting today, and think I identified that last few issues that need to be resolved with the story before I can commit myself to the fine-detail work of a final revision.

Easy-peasy. Now fifteen minutes of goofing off on facebook before it's time to get the boy!

coffee, to the touch, writing, facebook can kiss my ass
