So, I sort of obsessively save vids. If I watch a vid once and like it, I save it, even if that means ripping it off Youtube. And then I carefully rename it to my system, put it into the appropriate subfolder, and have them available for my rewatching pleasure forever!
Except, not so much. Because I've sort of been saving vids since about 1999 or 2000 (I am getting fannishly old, y'all - I will have been in fandom 20 years next year, how scary is that), I'm starting to run into format issues. Mostly with all the old realmedia files. VLC will still play most of them, but I mostly play vids in XBMC so that I can watch them on my television, and XBMC will no longer recognize .rm as a video file format. I can sort of get around this by renaming them all to .rmvb, but it still kind of grumbles at me. But then there are the ones that I can no longer get to play at all, and I'm assuming I pretty much just have to write off as lost.
Now, a few of these I know I have duplicated on DVD from con or fan sets and I could just rip myself a new copy if I have to, but the vast majority I don't. Since I'd prefer not to lose any more than I already have, does anyone have any suggestions for conversion? I've attempted to load ones that I know still play into avidemux, but they make it crash.
Uh, help? My collection of old Farscape/Buffy/Due South/Sentinel/Highlander/Smallville/Harry Potter/Etc vids needs to be saved!
I primarily run Linux, but I can get access to Windows if I have to.
(Oh, and, yes, I am registered for Vividcon this year! Yay! Though I'm, ah, still not sure I can actually afford to go this year. It may still end up rolled over.)
