So, if an FAA-approved baby carrier is
too big to fit into an airplane seat, what makes the airlines think that a human would fit comfortably?
For everyone's bitching these days that Americans are getting too fat, consider this -
The airplane seats are shrinking.
1950’s coach standard - 23.2 inches
1960’s coach standard - 24.7 DC-9/MD80
1970’s coach standard - 24 inches
1980’s coach standard - 26+ inches
1990’s coach standard - 26minus inches
Now?
The
average commercial airplane seat width is 17" wide.
Yup. Americans may be getting bigger, but we've lost over 6 inches of seat width in 60 years.
So what?
Compare this:
Average office chair seat width: 20"
Movie theater seat width: 20"
A 6" tall man?
Distance across hips: approx. 15"
Distance from elbow to elbow while standing: 23 inches +
Why are we paying so much more money for so much less room & comfort?
