I haven't checked the Voyager Skip It/Watch It guides I did for lizlet in a while, and I found a comment in my Season 5 Guide that I started to answer ... and then it got way out of hand. So, uh, I brought it over here, and I'll make a link over there when I'm done.

I really agree with this comment. While it’s valid to point out so much of Trek has the male gaze consciously or unconsciously front and center, I assume despite Jeri Taylor’s best efforts, it’s also projection to apply real world ethics onto some of these abstract and decidedly sci-fi situations.

I think it is reductive to only view Seven from the perspective that sexually she must only be a child. How does that vibe with the unique upbringing she has had? She’s regaining individuality and perspective, but is sexuality only something you understand if you aren’t part of the Collective? She certainly learned all about it over the years along with every other drone. Why is this aspect of her psyche deemed immature? Seems a very modern day thing to project onto a vague sci-fi concept. By that notion, is Kes, so wise and mature, but only 2 years old when Neelix is in a relationship with her and Paris is hitting on her, also a child? Again, sci-fi concept that perhaps should not be hamstrung by a narrow definition, otherwise why even bother doing anything high concept at all?

Seven of Nine consciously pursues dating, the Doctor plays Prof. Higgins to her Eliza, and considering he also is a 4 year-old computer program that only dabbled with romance a couple years into his existence, I think it’s a stretch to call that predatory in any way.
