As of 5:00 PM Pacific time yesterday, same-sex couples in California are legally able to be wed!
Four years ago, when San Francisco mayor Gavin Newsom distributed (for a brief time) marriage licences to same-sex couples, the first two married were Phyllis Lyon and Del Martin, prominent lesbian activists and partners for half a century. Yesterday, at 5:07, they were the first again in San Francisco, celebrating their second wedding.
This picture makes me sniffly. Geez, this one too. Doesn't help that there's not a dry eye in the audience. And
this one just makes me smile. So does this one. Man, do I love fags.
I do! I do love fags! Not just people with homosexual tendencies, but people who are openly and merrily gay in the face of adversity! Because we are kicked and despised and feared by many, and many of our friends and heroes are dead, and yet we are cheerful! Because despair gets you nothing, and neither does self-loathing. So as long as the protesters already there to tell us we're going to hell,
we might as well sing for them.
Seriously, protesters, you're standing there
saying horrible things to
beautiful smiling happy people and
families in
terrible outfits. You'd be doing far more for your cause by just staying home and muttering to an already-sympathetic audience rather than opening your mouths and revealing anew to the general public what joyless assholes you are.
In conclusion, you should read
mrmoonpants' story
We Are More, because it's a wonderful piece about lesbians in love, and because the pentultimate section makes me cry every damn time I read it.
Way to go, ladies.
