Quiet
Lady Saille
Viktor Hermione
Disclaimer: These two lovely characters belong to JK Rowling. This is as ever the product of an overactive mind.
Author’s Note: Ever wonder why she finds his silent watching annoying?
Their relationship was quiet. It was not filled with loud sounds or endless chatter. He talked, just seldom, sometimes getting him to speak was difficult, she had realized only later that he was shy because of the accent, of the way he could not create her name as she did.
She’d grown accustomed to hearing it pronounced just so, and actually grown to enjoy the unusual sound. She didn’t mind the silence, she loved to simply sit, or walk, or read, and she enjoyed the fact that she had someone to do those things with. It was only sometimes that she found his silence annoying, unnerving.
The library was quiet enough, and sometimes when he would watch her study, his gaze was palpable, like a caress. She could feel his eyes skimming over her hair, her lowered cheek, her nose, her lips, and down her arms, and sometimes she would look up and her breath would catch as their eyes would lock. For a moment, she’d forget to breathe, forget everything.
He’d hold her gaze captive, some primal force denying her escape. It was magic without spell or wand, and then he’d smile this soft little half smile as if he’d finally understood the secrets to the universe, and he’d glance down and begin reading again.
She’d shake herself mentally, glance down at her own book and realize that she had no idea what she just read, it was as if her mind had been made a blank slate, all that knowledge gone and all it had taken was a single glimpse into dark eyes. She’d sigh soundlessly, admitting defeat when none of those precious bits of knowledge would come to the fore and she’d turn back the five or six pages she’d gone over since she’d looked into his eyes and start anew.
At this rate, she’d never finish her book.
