#14: Labyrinth

Don’t like?  Watch the movie first.

Labyrinth is an odd little film from the 1980’s.  Produced by George Lucas (of Star Wars fame) and directed by Jim Henson, starring David Bowie (who wrote and performed the songs) and a very young Jennifer Connelly, with Brian Froud providing the “conceptual design” we have a number of big names collaborating on this work.  What it is, is a fairytale, of sorts.  The main plot is that a teenage girl, sick of having to watch her baby brother all the time, accidentally summons the goblins from her favorite book to take him away.  When she recants her wish, the goblin king (David Bowie, but all you really notice is his codpiece) tells her she can retrieve him if she can finish his labyrinth in thirteen hours.

The realm of the goblin king is where Jim Henson and Brian Froud (a ridiculously good fairy artist) shine.  The realm itself looks like something pulled from one of Froud’s paintings.  It’s made much more campy, less ethereal, by the presence of Henson’s puppets.  They are the ones that make the goblins and other creatures in the labyrinth come alive.

David Bowie’s character, Jareth, is amusing but doesn’t show up as often as one might expect in the beginning.  He does show up whenever he can make the way for Sarah (Jennifer Connelly’s character, our protagonist) much harder.  Although it’s hard to focus on much of what he’s actually saying.  Many people who watch this movie repeat the same thing: David Bowie in those pants is hard to not look at.

Before I go too far and fuck myself over in this review, I’ll share the sentiments of another reviewer.

Final Thoughts: 4/5 stars.  I’ll watch it again when I’m feeling nostalgic.
