X-Men Evolution: Monster Crush

WARNING: MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS
Don’t like?  Watch the episode first.

So sometimes Mystique is a little over-dramatic, even for a villain.  Gonna chalk that one up to the fact that this is a cartoon.  Although I like that they throw a little realism into the treatment of mutants (one of the finer points of this Marvel universe), like when Fred “the Blob” asks if Mystique is from the circus.  Also, the show does a good job at making awkward teenage moments as a mutant just as awkward as regular teens, but in a different way.  It seems weird mutant things are just the norm in that high school.

Although awkward devolves into creepy kinda quickly in this episode.  It’s okay to make the super-strong dude rage.  It’s not okay to make him creepy stalker/kidnapper to the first person who shows him anything other than snark and ridicule.

Thankfully the story never gets overly-awkward or cheesy.  It stays pretty well within the bounds of most high school set cartoons.  Which is to say it has weird lingo, awkward moments and it’s fair share of drama and, this being X-Men, mutants and butt-kickings.  The dramatic bits are dramatic enough I suppose, not like Yu Yu Hakusho where you might overly care but not laugh worthy like YuGiOh either.

I like how Jean can be a good take-charge kind of delegate.  She can calm beasts and smooth rough spots and handle herself.  But I’ve never found her quite as badass as she could be.  She still leaves something to be desired, she’s a little too girly and weak sometimes.  I leave all that awesome stuff for the Rogue.  She fulfills the bad-ass bitch role quite nicely.  Good to see her fighting for what she wants without being crazy about it.  Rogue rules.

Note: the Star Trek references were extra dorky and made me feel like an uber nerd.  Thanks Marvel…
