The newest member of our family!
This is Kumquat. We took a trip today out to Ralston Chinchilla Ranch in Hillsboro to take a look at some chinchillas. I wanted to get Rutabaga a friend. We got to see day old kits, up to chins that were several years old. The place was very clean, the chins were very healthy and the lady who runs it had a wall full of first and second place ribbons. We got to see some very neat mutations too!
We brought home a young boy, born in August 2009, who has a very neat and accidental genetic mutation that disqualifies him from showing. He has a corkscrew tail. This makes for an interesting pet quality but because of the tail the fur doesn't lay exactly flat which docks him points straight off for showing and is not something that should be kept in the breeding pool.
The introduction has gone well for the two of them! We have a smaller cage next to Rutabaga's large cage set up for Kumquat and they had some run around time in the X-pen and also in the large cage. Rutabaga so far has just wanted to mount Kumquat. Luckily, Kumquat has good chinchilla skills after living with other chins for his whole life. I think things are going to go just fine to have them living together. :)
