They had about $3,800 worth of crack cocaine, police said, but apparently they needed a map.
Three men carrying crack cocaine in plain view found themselves in jail Sunday after they mistook the gate at MacDill Air Force Base for a toll booth and drove up to the armed guards, police said.
Matthew C. Dail, 19, of Ruskin, Jason Michael Sharp, 19, of Tampa, and Simon Joseph, 20, of Apollo Beach were being held without bail Monday at the Orient Road Jail, each charged with felony trafficking in cocaine, records show.
About 9:45 p.m. Sunday, the three were headed south on Dale Mabry Highway in Joseph's 1984 Toyota when they approached the base at a high rate of speed, officials said.
Guards stopped them at the gate and learned they were lost, officials said.
The men told Tampa police who arrived to assist the guards that they thought the gate was ``a Crosstown toll booth,'' an incident log states.
Several travelers have made that mistake, said MacDill spokesman Tech Sgt. Chris Miller.
But police noticed a plastic bag in the car containing what appeared to be crack cocaine, reports state.
A search of the car revealed three ``cookies,'' or large discs of crack, which would have been broken into smaller rocks for sale, police said. The drugs tested positive for cocaine and weighed 1.34 ounces, reports state.
Police said the men also had a scale, drug paraphernalia and more than $1,000 in cash.
