Literary ramblings

So recently read two Mercedes Lackey books, she's still one of my favored authors, though she's starting to get repetitive with some things. Not sure how new the books are, have a feeling one of them was fairly recent. And yes, this is the result of a recent trip to the library, so I might be posting more ramblings in the next day or so.

The first was Music to My Sorrow with Rosemary Edgehill (eluki bes shahar) and was really quite good and part of the "Urban Fantasy" series that's sort of along the lines of Serrated Edge but technically a different series. I wasn't very fond of the first two that were with Ellen Guon but that's because I think Guon is a craptastic writer. The rest of the series which was with Edgehill is really good and I can definitely tell that Edgehill was keeping Lackey from going for her usual badguy stuff. Having read Edgehill on her own I've always enjoyed her stories and hope that she writes some more.

The second book was The Wizard of London and sort of, but not quite, part of the Elemental Masters series (again a series I normally enjoy since she makes some delightful twists on the fairy tales most of us grew up with) and was really digging it up until the main villain hits upon her primary plan. I won't spoil it, but it was enough for me to say "Ugh, not again !" My other gripe is why is it so many authors make the frostmage types the villains? Why can't there be a story where the frostmage is the good guy?! :)

And no, I'm not writing it considering what I've done to my poor frostmage types in the past.

Currently trying to read Area 51 by Robert Doherty. So far it's pretty meh and was making me think of a ripoff of Independence Day. Then I realized it was published in 1997 and set in 1996....so I have a feeling there's a good bit of influence there. So far typical UFO conspiracy and not any particularly good writing or characters. Will probably finish it just because I've had a lack of new stuff to read.
