Chapter 16
The tension in the car was palpable; Mackenzie thought if she had a number ten scalpel, she'd be able to slice through it. There they all sat, on an access road in front of some skeevy warehouse not all that far where they kidnapped her, waiting for Martha’s contact to appear. She sighed and looked out the window at the purple-ish gray early morning sky. She never wanted to go home more in her life; her parents were probably already going crazy calling around for her. Maybe they’d even gone to the police to report her missing. But at the same time, she wanted to stay and see what would happen. She wanted to help these crazy-ass but ultimately decent people… How weird was it that she was now thinking of her kidnappers in friendly ways-Stockholm Syndrome much? Sure, the circumstances in which they met weren’t exactly ideal, more like bloody bizarre, but now she couldn’t think of them as anything else but friends.
“I think it’s him,” Martha whispered anxiously, breaking the silence. They all turned to look at the silver Audi slowly making its way to where they were parked.
The car stopped about 10 meters away from them on the opposite side of the road, and a sandy-haired man dressed in jeans and a black hoodie stepped out and shut the door, jamming his hands in his front pockets, eyes surveying the site nervously.
“It’s him.” Martha seemed to sag back on her seat in relief, but Ianto and Mickey still looked suspicious.
“Martha and I will go first, talk to the guy, and see what he can do for us. No one needs to know Ianto is alive unless it’s absolutely necessary.” Mickey was in All Business mode. Ianto nodded his agreement. He wasn’t too keen on announcing the world he was back if that meant being locked in a cell, or worse, strapped to a gurney.
Martha and Mickey stepped out, meeting the stranger mid way on the side of the road. It was still very early, but once in a while, a car passed by. It was a secure spot, no one would listen in, but there would be witnesses if something happened.
“Thanks for coming, Sully.” Martha greeted him with a warm smile that wasn’t returned.
“Well, what can I say doc? I own you one. You saved my life.” His eyes shifted around again quickly. “You’ve got yourself into a world of trouble Dr. Jones.”
Martha frowned, taken aback by that statement. “How much do you know?”
“I know that a few months ago a report made its way to the bosses’ desks; it said some of the bodies from the Thames House were missing, and it had all the signs of an inside job.”
“How many?”
“Officially? Five. Including Captain Harkness.” Sully snorted, “As if we don’t know what really happened to him. I don’t even know why they bothered tagging him as dead.”
“Unofficially?” Mickey pressed, ignoring the immortality detour. Old news.
“Seventeen of one-hundred and sixty-nine,” he replied darkly. “This time, Torchwood Three's archivist, Ianto Jones, made the list.”
“What'd they find out during the investigation?” Martha pressed.
Sully snorted again. “What investigation? They were too busy pointing fingers after the Four-Five-Six disaster. No one cared about a few dead bodies going missing.”
“And afterwords?”
“Afterwords, no one wanted to drag any more attention to UNIT, not when a new government was just being established and a new Prime Minister was being elected. They told everyone to keep their mouths shut and sent empty coffins to the families.”
“No one cared what the bodies were being used for?” Martha asked, dismayed but not altogether shocked with the lackadaisical attitudes all around.
“Everyone who knew about it had their guesses. The most popular one was genetic experiments.” Sully shrugged. “It was all very hush, hush. No one dared to talk about it, afraid to wake up missing a few months, or, you know, not at all.”
“They just swept everything under the mat,” Mickey remarked with a disgusted expression. These so-called defenders of Earth only cared about their own careers and reputations. The Doctor would be irate if he heard about this whole thing.
“Exactly,” Sully replied with a nod, before focusing his eyes back on Martha and smiling humorlessly. “But then came you, Martha, raising all hell and red flags as you shouted the name Ianto Jones to the four winds. Someone high in UNIT command wants you dead.”
Mackenzie couldn’t hear the conversation happening on the outside, but, by the way Mickey’s shoulders tensed, she knew the man just listened to something he did not like. She glanced at Ianto to ask if he knew what had been said and noticed the man had gone rigid in his seat, a dark expression clouding his face. Oh, this was going to be fan-fucking-tastic.
“Ianto?” she called carefully, but he didn’t turn to look at her. “What is it?”
“Do something for me, Mackenzie…” His voice was tight and measured.
“Sure…” Because she was In It now. “What?”
“Get down on the floor, and no matter what happens, no matter what you hear, don’t get out of this car. As far as they know, it’s only me, Martha and Mickey in this whole thing. No need to put you in even more danger.”
She stared at him wide eyed in confusion. What did he mean by 'even more danger'? She looked over their surroundings and, as far as she could see, there were only them there. Then again, she didn’t have an extra chromosome that gave her Superman’s vision and hearing.
“Something’s wrong, isn’t it?” Hello, Shit. Please meet Fan.
“Very,” Ianto gritted, eyes going back to the conversation unfolding before them.
“Who wants me dead Sully?” Martha asked, her voice only held a hint of fear and Mickey was very proud of her. “Tell me who!”
“I’ll do better than that, Dr. Jones.” The sudden addition of a fourth voice made them spin around to face a brunette woman walking towards them, coming from one of the warehouses. She was coldly beautiful, with the hard glint in her almond eyes and the dangerous smirk on her red lips. “I’m going to take you to him.”
She snapped her fingers and suddenly, they were surrounded by soldiers. Emma Waters took a second to revel in her success. It was amazing the boost in confidence she got from being able to deliver results that would impress her boss-so much better than a manicure at her favorite salon.
“I’m sorry Martha, I really am.” Sully’s voice shook terribly, and he had tears in his eyes as one of the soldiers pushed him to his knees and aimed a gun at the back of his head. “But they took my sister--I had to do it!”
“He is telling the truth, you know,” the woman commented as blandly as if she were talking about the weather. “He really did protest and refuse… at first.” She paused directly in front of Martha and smirked. “It’s a pleasure to finally meet you, Dr. Jones.”
“I would extend the same pleasantry, but my mother taught me not to lie.” Martha replied venomously, eyes blazing. “IANTO GET OUT OF HERE!” Martha yelled earning herself and blow on the back of the head that sent her to her knees. Mickey tried to move to her defense, just to receive the same treatment.
“I wouldn’t do that if I were you, Mr. Jones.” Emma called out, smirking as she eyed the car. “You might bounce back from a gunshot, but Dr. Jones isn’t that lucky.”
A few tense seconds ticked by before Ianto emerged from the vehicle, against Mackenzie’s protests, with his hands on the back of the head in obvious sign of surrender.
“Mr. Jones,” Emma practically leered and walked towards him. “For a dead man, you sure as hell are hard to find.”
“Maybe you shouldn’t have brought me back then.” He replied calmly, his eyes spoke of a quiet fury for seeing his friends in danger.
“Oh trust me, I won’t make that same mistake again.” Ianto didn’t even see her lifting her gun before the bullet lodged itself in his skull. Laid out on the ground, dead. Again.
