Title: 112. Waking Up (The Boy Next Door Series)

Summary: Suddenly, Arthur is aware that he isn’t seeing anything but darkness. Huh… who would know?

112. Waking Up
Arthur is suddenly aware he’s lying in a bed (not nearly as soft and comfortable as his own) and all around him there are steady beeps and other unfamiliar noises.
His entire body feels uncomfortably numb, except his right hand, which is warm and involved in a soft grip; his left leg, which hurts a little and the uncomfortable thing stuck in his throat.
He tries to cough it out, but the motion makes his entire body scream in protest and suddenly, all the beeping increases and he’s finally aware of all things hooked on his body. Arthur panics and tries to struggle out of bed.
“Arthur! Arthur! Stop moving. You’re going to injure yourself.” He recognizes Merlin’s urgent, but hopeful voice and stills. “Good, good. You can understand me. Can you open your eyes?”
Suddenly, Arthur is aware that he isn’t seeing anything but darkness. Huh… who would know?
It feels like his lifting an entire wall away from his eyes and it makes him exhausted, but Arthur manages to finally focus on Merlin’s face above him. She grins wide.
“Hey you. Welcome back.” Arthur opens his mouth to reply, but the strange object is still lodged on his throat. “You can’t speak for now. They had to intubate you so you could breathe.”
Arthur just stares up confused. Who are they?
“Oh! The doctors.” Merlin replies with a smile as if she had just read his mind. “You’re in the hospital.” The smile quickly dies down. “You were in an accident and had been in coma for the last couple of weeks. They were beginning to think you weren’t going to wake up.”
Arthur remembers faintly about being in a car and red lights, but everything is fuzzy and thinking is so tiring right now. He decides just to focus on Merlin’s face for the time being.
“I should call the doctors and your father. He needs to know you’re awake.” Merlin stands up quickly and makes mention to leave, but, with a supernatural effort, Arthur grabs her hand, making her pause and look back at him.
Don’t leave me. He pleads silently with his eyes. Merlin watches him for a heartbeat, before nodding and returning to her seat.
“I won’t go then. A nurse or a doctor will have to come by eventually.” Arthur smiles sleepily around the tube in his mouth in gratitude, his lids fluttering close. “You’re tired; go back to sleep. I’ll be here when you wake up again.”
After that reassurance, Arthur lets his eyes close again and, almost immediately, sleep claims him.
