Chapter 3

Liv stared at the ceiling for long minutes before heaving a sigh and moving to sit on the windowsill to watch the sun rise. She had another one of those dreams. It was the fifth time in the past two weeks and it was bothering the girl quite a lot.

The girl knew it wasn’t one of the usual premonitory dreams she usually have. Those were always followed by a sense of urgency and, they were always clear enough for her to get the name of a street or something like that.

These latest dreams were all flashes of images that Liv thought to be rather familiar, but couldn’t pinpoint exactly where she had seen them before. Not to mention the only feeling that accompanied those dreams was frustration. Liv was aware that there was some important information to retain from them, but no matter how much she tried she couldn’t grasp it.

Another sigh and Liv abandoned her musings and turned her focus to the grayish sky slowly turning to clear blue, tainted by orange strikes of light.

It had always calmed her to see the sun rising after she had a nightmare. Maybe it was her metaphorical way to shine light in the darkness of her mind or something silly like that, but it helped. It really did.

With her mind a little more at ease, Liv noticed a taxi cab parked just outside Mrs. Lewis house and frowned. The old woman wouldn’t possibly go out in this ungodly hour. She could barely move at all. So why…

Realization downed in Liv and the girl shot up from her place and ran down the stairs. How long had that taxi been there? The whole night? And how many times had he come before? Why hadn’t she noticed before?

Liv threw the front door open and crossed the garden with quick steps, but before she could reach the fence the car was already speeding down the street.

She smiled. No, she grinned; a wide and happy grin that hadn’t really reached her face in years. Liv may have missed them, but she now knew without a doubt that it had been John in there. That he had been sitting in the taxi watching over her. He hadn’t abandoned her after all.

---

John sighed in regret when the house was finally out of sight, letting his head thud against the headrest and squeezing his eyes shut.

It had been stupid to come over, he knew, but the occultist needed some kind of reassurance that Liv was okay; that she was safe; perhaps even happy… She almost caught him. But it didn’t matter; she had figured out that it was him inside the cab and that’s why she went outside. The fact that he left when she appeared was only a confirmation. Liv was a smart girl; she would definitely draw the right conclusion. Damn, stupid move, Constantine.

“Chas.” John called out with a sigh. “Take me to the park.”

The driver glanced at John from the rearview mirror, noticing the closed eyes, but nodded anyway.

“What’s in the park?” He asked carefully. Constantine didn’t usually share the details of his work with Chas, but sometimes…

“I heard that Gabriel was back in town. I need to have a word with him.”

John opened his eyes and gazed out the window. He had spent the last couple of weeks searching any reference about this Sentinel thing, but found none in his books. Beeman hadn’t had much luck either which left the occultist with two choices: Gabriel and Midnite. At least the first one wouldn’t try to kill him at sight.

There weren’t too many people in the park when Constantine arrived; it was still early after all.

After a quick scan of the place, John found the half-breed he was looking for sitting in one of the benches, feeding pigeons. He walked over with sure strides and dropped besides the blonde man.

“What do I own this visit, John?” The blonde asked without turning to look at the taller man.

“I met a half-breed a few weeks ago and he said some things about an old case I worked in. The Mayfair case. I bet you remember that one Gabe, you found the girl’s living relatives before I could even ask for help.”

If Constantine wasn’t watching the angel so closely, he would have missed the way his eyes quickly shifted to red. The only sign of tension in the creature.

“Indeed I remember. Poor girl; to bear such a tragedy in such a young age.”

“You know, my contact said the funniest of things to me. He said that it wasn’t a demon who redecorated the Mayfair’s walls with their blood. You wouldn’t know anything about that, would you?” Gabriel remained in silence. “How about Liv having a price tag in her head? Do you know about that? Why demons would want a 9 years old girl dead? And why didn’t they try again since? Damnit Gabriel! Answer me!”

“Constantine, you walking down a very dangerous path. Let go of this case.” Gabriel warned, finally turning to look at the occultist; his eyes flaming red. “The girl is safe, that’s all you need to know.”

“I don’t trust your side anymore than I trust the demons’. I’ll decide if she’s safe.” John stood up, his brown eyes boring holes on Gabriel. “One last question Gabriel: What’s a Sentinel?”

The half-breed’s eye burned even more and his wings opened behind him as he also stood, carefully watching Constantine.

“Something that does not concern you.” Gabriel replied dryly and moved away slowly, making his way towards a limousine parked a few feet from them.

“Is she the Sentinel?” John asked but Gabriel only paused briefly before climbing inside the car and slamming the door shut without another word. “Well,” John sighed. “That was productive.”

He made his way back to the cab, already lightening a smoke and slid onto the backseat.

The conversation with Gabriel hadn’t give Constantine many answers but definitely pointed him to the right direction. Heaven was just as interested in Liv as Hell; because the girl was this Sentinel thing. Now, all he needed to do is figure out what the hell that meant and how could he keep her safe.
