23. Apologies
When he hears the tap on the window of his room, Arthur nearly jumps out of his own skin before turning to see Merlin waving sheepishly at him, illuminated only by the yellowish glow from his table lamp.
Arthur lets out a puff of air annoyed before unlatching the window. Only Merlin to climb his bedroom window in the middle of the night; the girl was crazy.
“Hey.” She says hurried, sitting on the sill.
Arthur doesn’t reply, just stalks to the door, opens it and shuts it right after.
“The door works just fine so I do wonder: why on Earth would you climb through the window?”
There is a bit of irritation on his tone and it makes Merlin cringe. All the work they had to establish a fragile friendship to be ruined by a silly prank.
“I’m sorry.” Merlin says quickly, startling Arthur. “I overreacted with the fright thing.”
Arthur recovers quickly and put on a detached look on as he crosses his arms over his chest and watches her with an arched eyebrow.
“Understatement.”
“I had some really bad experiences with that movie.” Merlin explains with a faint blush. “And it always freaks me out.”
Arthur sighs and sits on the bed, irritation subsiding.
“Yeah, I guess the whole exploding television thing certainly didn’t help. I still don’t get it how that happened.”
Merlin wrings her fingers together.
“Me either.” They stay in silence for a long time.
“Sorry I scared you.”
Arthur offers quietly and Merlin rewards him with a tiny smile.
“It’s ok.”
“Ok.”
Arthur smiles back and they fall silent once again.
“I should get back.” Merlin finally says and Arthur nods.
“Try not to fall down and break your neck. The lights and siren of the fire department will keep me up.” He teases just as she swings a leg outside.
“I wouldn’t dare to disturb your beauty sleep, oh Your Royal Pratness!”
Merlin scoffs, before breaking into a grin.
“Night, Arthur.”
“Good Night, Merlin.”
Arthur answers with a grin of his own as he watches the girl carefully climbing out of the window to the roof with a soft thud. She quickly, but surely, makes her way to the edge and disappears into the darkness.
