Chapter 1

Her shoes were dirty and that sucked big time. They were her favorite pair of Converse. They were high top with gray camo stamp and now they were dirty and it would be a bitch to clean since there were mud, some yellowish substance that Liv was almost positive sure it was peanut butter and blood stains.

Seriously, she couldn’t figure out how on Earth she managed to get peanut butter on her sneakers, but she didn’t have the luxury to wonder for too long; the principal’s office door opened and Aunt Sue stepped out looking utterly pissed. Liv was so screwed; probably grounded for the rest of the month if she was lucky.

Sue stood by the door exchanging quick words with Mr. Sullivan, the principal. From where Liv was sitting, she could see Brad Ackins holding a towel against his nose and a woman holding his hand. You’d figured that a guy that size would know how to block a punch. Liv rolled his eyes, such a cry bay he was.

Aunt Sue shook Principal Sullivan’s hand and turned to her niece, eying her sharply before turning on her heels and stalking out of the room. Liv jumped to her feet, glancing briefly at the old man before following the woman reluctantly. Warning bells were ringing on her head and Liv considered if Sue was able to murder her and make look like an accident.

The older woman didn’t say a word until both of them were inside the car and any attempt of escape coming from Liv would be futile. Sue turned the engine on and gripped the wheel firmly, trying to even her breathing.

“Two weeks! You’re suspended for two weeks!” Sue said through her gritted teeth. “And you were lucky. Mrs. Ackins was asking for you to be expelled.” She sighed, looking at Liv with tired eyes. “What were you thinking?”

Liv shrugged, looking out the window. “His nose shouldn’t have broken so easily; he may wanna see a doctor about that.”

Sue shook her head at the answer. Of course the girl would crack a joke; Liv always did that when in trouble. A mechanism of defense said Doctor Barnes, Liv’s therapist. He told Sue how traumatized Liv was for witness her parents’ murder. He blamed the fact for the girl’s violent nightmares and rebellious behavior.

And God knows she’d tried to be understanding, she really did, but sometimes Liv pushed all of her buttons, sent her over the edge of anger. What was more frustrating was the fact that Liv has so much potential; she was such a smart kid with wonderful grades, but she couldn’t stop getting in trouble. It was almost like if she enjoyed.

“You’re grounded.” Sue finally said as she parked the car in the driveway. “No computer, no television, no phone, no stereo… you’ll do all of your chores and burry yourself in you books, school books to compensate the two weeks away from school. Ask Mike to bring your school assignments, that’s the only time you’re allowed to see him.”

Liv sighed heavily and nodded. She was going to be bored to death but it could be a lot worst.

“And tomorrow morning you’ll go to Father McAllister and you will offer your services to help out in the kermis.” Sue finished, getting out of the car.

Liv sat still in the car for a couple more seconds too stunned to say anything, but she recovered quickly, jumping out of the vehicle with her mouth hanging open in shock. Kermis? Father McAllister? CHURCH?

“Wow, wow, wow… Are you serious?” Her Aunt stopped on her tracks when Liv spoke. “It wasn’t that bad! One broken nose isn’t enough to be doomed to church!”

Sue turned around, stalking towards her niece dangerously.

“You’re lucky I’m not locking you up on your room for the rest of your life. You’re gonna do exactly what I said or we’ll have serious problems. I’m done dealing with your misbehavior. I’m done making excuses for you. Having your parents killed doesn’t justify acting like a brat! Grow up, Liv! This stopped being cute when my sister’s body hit the grave!”

Liv was frozen in place, too stunned to say anything, staring at Sue as the woman finished her speech with a heavy chest and tearful eyes.

It took a moment for her to recover her movements, but as soon as it happened Liv pushed past her Aunt, walking to the house, ignoring her name being called. Those words hurt more that she’d care to admit.

Apparently, she was a burden to everyone around her, but if her Aunt just knew… about the dreams and the bruises, the visions… if anyone just knew… if she wasn’t all alone… If *he* hadn’t forgotten his promise….

---

A heavy rain was falling furiously around him and one more time John Constantine cursed Chas’ lack of punctuality. He was soaked to the bone, unable to light a cigarette and at least another 7 blocks away from his apartment. Yep, this was definitely not his day.

“Constantine…” A voice hissed from the dark alley as he was passing through. “Constantine…”

John paused for a second, considering his actions. He had just performed an exorcism a couple of hours ago and was pretty much exhausted, but still, he wanted to know who the hell was stalking him a few blocks from his apartment.

He moved quietly inside the alley, hand reaching inside his pocket for a bottle of holly water. John listened carefully, picking up the hustling of clothes on his left. Turning quickly, he grabbed the dirty old man by the neck and pressed against the wall, smirking slightly as the mask of flesh disintegrated before his eyes and the rotten face of the demon showed itself to him.

“Eddie! Long time, no see.” John greeted with fake cheerfulness. “What the hell do you want? A ride home?”

“I have information for you.” John arched an eyebrow, looking suspicious.

“What kind of information?”

“About a double murder 5 years ago, word is, you rescued a little girl that day, but never got the killer.”

John didn’t even have to think, he knew the half-breed was talking about the Mayfair murder. That case still haunted him so many years after.

Letting go of the demon, John crossed his arms over his chest, wishing more than ever that he could light a cigarette.

“I’m listening.”

“Did it ever strike you as weird the fact that the kid was never harmed? Not a single hair out of place? Or why such a nice family would be slaughtered in the middle of the night, just like that? Who would be so angry at them?”

Constantine didn’t like where this was going; Eddie was just voicing the questions that haunted John’s mind all this time, not saying anything new.

“I’m loosing interest Eddie, feeling very inclined to cut this chat short and send you back.” Eddie had the nerve to laugh out loud, leering at John.

“Do you know what a Sentinel is Constantine?” The demon asked, walking in circles around the exorcist. “I bet you don’t…” He smirked and now John had enough.

He pushed Eddie back against the wall with one hand and pulled out a small medal with a saint on it. The demon hesitated for a moment, looking scared.

“The girl, she had a death sentence on her head. Not a single demon wants her alive.” Eddie started to speak fast. “Not even Lucifer. Do you think if a demon had done the killing, she would still me alive?”

“Liv saw it. She said….” But the half-breed cut him off.

“Did she say demon?” John didn’t answer. “Two things Johnny boy: It wasn’t a demon; and her parents were already dead.”

Constantine’s grip on the demon loosened and Eddie stepped away, fixing his dirty rags.

“Who ordered her death?” John asked when Eddie started to leave.

“I won’t say. And you can send me down if you want; he is much more scarier than you. The things he’d do to me…” The half-breed shuddered and with those words, walked away, leaving John alone in the rain with much more questions than before.
