And hey, if someone can tell me how I post icons for people to snitch, let me know. Oy

Now, this is where it gets interesting. The easiest way is probably to get your Scrapbook going. Then you don't need to host any pictures etc on another site somewhere.

What I would suggest, first, is that you go have a look at my user profile. Click Pictures, under my bio, and that will take you to my Scrapbook stuff. The first thing you will see are my galleries. These are the folders where I organise my pictures, icons etc that aren't being used as my userpics.

Then go back to your user profile.

1. hold your mouse over Scrapbook (along the top)
2. click on Main
3. hold mouse on Manage
4. click on Galleries.

The page that opens will have a Create New Gallery box first up. Click on that and follow the prompts.

For Type, I'd suggest Topic

For text, Icons with description underneath

For Permissions, I'd click Public and Anyone for copying. This is for icons only. If you decide to do a gallery for personal photos etc, as I have, I'd restrict them to friends only and no copying.

Navigation - ignore

Advanced - ignore

Then hit Create Gallery.

This then gives your your gallery ready to load your icons into.

Step 2: uploading pictures, icons etc to galleries.

Go back to Manage in Scrapbook

Click Upload

Or - go back to your user profile, hold the mouse over Scrapbook, click on Upload.

This will take you to the Upload Pictures page

In the Upload Into spot, hit the dropdown, and it should show your Icon gallery. Choose that one.

Choose Public for security

Hit Browse and go to where you store your Icons on your computer, choose the icon. If you want to upload more than one icon into that gallery, just hit Browse again on the next line and repeat for new icon. From memory, you can upload up to 12 pictures at a time on this page, just by hitting Browse.

Once you have listed all the icons you want to upload, hit the Upload button underneath. Then it will take you to a page where you give each icon a tag (optional), title (necessary) and description (also necessary).
It will just keep scrolling through one icon after the other, as you hit enter after naming etc.

Then you can view your new gallery and icons enclosed by going back to your user profile and clicking on Pictures.

Note!!! if you want to add a person's user name to the description of the icon, eg munchkinofdoom, write it exactly as you would in an entry. It will look funny in its box, but will produce a clickable user name on the Userpics page.

Note 2!!! This is a doozy. When you want to display an icon, or anything else from your Scrapbook, in an entry, there are a couple of things to remember.

1. Open a new Window
2. In new Window, go back to your user profile
3. click on Pictures
4. Click on Icon gallery
5. Click on the icon you want to add to an entry
6. Single click the url, right click mouse on url, click Copy
7. Go back to first Window, which has your open journal entry
8. Copy icon url into entry REMOVING LAST 3 CHARACTERS, and adding the html required for adding a url (in that file I showed you, it is the one directly above the photo of the shocked girl). Delete the [url] and add the new url for the icon.

While this is not a problem usually anywhere else, any image you copy from Scrapbook must have those last 3 characters removed, or you will get the dreaded red box.

Hit Preview before posting, and it will show if the icons/pictures are there.

I hope this helps. It is a bugger when you start out, but it gets easier. Creating new galleries and uploading becomes second nature, and I always keep that file I sent you open when doing anything in my journal entries.

Yell if you have any problems. I had Scrapbook going in a 2nd Window the whole time I was writing this, and clicking buttons where directed, and it seemed to work.

Fingers crossed...

I was doing so well following your instructions, and I got my scrapbook open and have a newbie icon gallery and I'm ready to go. I got lost, however, in the displaying an icon thing. I found the url for my pic, and it was like this ......pic slash 00002bt7 slash g3

So, I took off the last three as you said which is the slash g3 and I added a dot html, but that didn't work. And I couldn't figure out what photo of a shocked girl you were talking about.

It's conceivable I have NO idea what you're talking about and have just done something really stupid, in which case I throw myself on your mercy. But the rest of it seemed pretty easy, thanks to your very clear instructions. Thank you SO much.

Anyhoo, if you can help me with this last hurdle I will be forever in your debt and owe you a story or something. I need to figure this out by tomorrow so I can enter the Numb3rs icon contest.

Thanks!!!

Okay. First of all, did you get the Word file titled LJ and HTML tags, that I emailed to you on January 27th? If you scroll down in that document, you will find a photo of a shocked woman. Immediately above that it gives the instructions for adding a photo to your lj entry.
If you can't find the file, I can resend it for you, as it is very useful.

Now, what it didn't tell you in that file, is that the urls in Scrapbook will not work in an lj entry unless you remove the last 3 digits: eg

http://pics.livejournal.com/ladyra/pic/00002bt7/g3

This is your url for your Due South icon. While in your lj entry, you need to copy and past that url, delete the /g3 and add the html code required to insert the image.

eg:
: < img src="http://pics.livejournal.com/ladyra/pic/00002bt7" >
Note the space between < img... and " >. This is only so you can see what I have done. Remove the spaces, then when you are ready, hit preview and your icon should be there. Fingers crossed.

LOL. I've been looking madly through your photo gallery on your LJ for a picture of a shocked woman. LOL. I'm better now. Thanks. I'll go give it another try after I finish writing Don and Charlie having sex. LOL.

I understand entirely! When ts5000 gave me that file and showed me how to display pictures/icons in an lj entry, she conveniently forgot to tell me about that deleting last 3 digits bit! And that was after it had taken her ages to figure out why it wasn't working. I think she did it on purpose... bestest friends are dangerous!!

Let me know if you have any more problems.

I did it!!! ladyra February 2 2006, 06:05:34 UTC
I did it, I did it!!! Thank you SO much. Really. I can't tell you how much I appreciate your help. And I even used your basic guide to get your name done up right on my latest journal update, where there are four new icons I just made. Yay!! I feel like I won the damn nobel prize. Rodney would be mocking me.
