Was just looking up the Unemployment Rates by State on Bureau of Labor Statistics website (too lazy to do cuts and stuff so here's the full link:
http://www.bls.gov/web/laus/laumstrk.htm) and found the figures for March of this year (April's isn't up yet). I'm wallowing in early morning disbelief that Nevada (13.4%) has a higher unemployment rate than New York (8.6%) and California (12.6%). Out of 51 States, Nevada is at No. 50.
Unbelievable. Maybe I should move to North Dakota (4.0%) or Virginia (7.4%) or Maryland (7.7%). If the standard of living wasn't so high in New York I'd consider moving there, too.
Damn. What prompted my looking up the statistics? Nevada's figures were announced this morning. Went up. Again. Highest ever at 13.7%. City-wise, Las Vegas is at 14.2, a new record that's nothing to be proud of. The Reno-Sparks area is at 13.5% and Carson City (state capital) is at 13.4, which was March's rate, too.
Extremely sobering facts.
Here's another one: out of the estimated 193,000 people who are out of work, 140,000 of them live in the Las Vegas area.
I'd call that an even bigger incentive to move out of Vegas, wouldn't you?
