gah

Gah! Tonight is not the night for me and computers!

(Yes, I'm in England. Been super busy with research all day and crashing and watching tv all night--more later)

I brought a couple tv eps for dad on memstick because mom failed to record them.

But, his winmedia is old and won't play them. So, I download the new versiuon.

Still won't play them.

So I follow the link to the missing codec, but I get a 'this page not foiund' error.

Okay, I'll just download VLC which I use at work.

Running the set up fails.

Okay, how about Real Player.

Nope, won't play the files (only sound, like winmedia) and it seems to download Norton antivirus, too, which I immediately dump.

Last but not least, surely Winamp will play them.

Again with the nope.

They play on my laptop.

So, while I'm out shopping tomorrow dad'll have to use my laptop and when we're home I'll load the older version of VLC that I have at work onto a memstick and take it to him and load it onto his computer. No guarantees it'll work without the codec, though. Stupid missing codec.

And, then, I went back to my room to discover I was no longer on the wireless network. When I clicked it said none were available. It said to check that my computer switch for wireless was on. Naturally I saved everything and rebooted my computer.

Still no network.

...

When I got up off the bed to help dad, I managed to switch off the wireless which is a button on the front of the computer that is currently restiing on my knees.

*sigh*

I'm going to watch Supernatural and CSI now.

Some of you will get postcards. Of the changing of the guards? Tower of London? The Queen?

Nope. I've been to the National Archives and the Imperial War Museum (the latter at which Osama Bin Laden did research!). Both had shops, of course. Whille the National Archives will let you take digital pics of hundreds of year old documents and make your own copies, the Imperial War Museum will make copies for you (at 40p a page! compared to 10p at the BNA) and you can't take pics. And you can only use a pencil so I'm developing that bump thing on my finger and my hand hurts from writing. Also, you can' t use your iPod. Maybe someone burst out in song or something but that seems silly as it's silent to everyone but you! The BNA is run much more efficiently (though they make you open your laptop to see if you're smuggling documents in it or something) and you swipe your id card to order docs, reserve a seat , get in and out etc., but the Imperial War Museum reading room is much prettier. Wood stacks and desks, leather chairs, an octagonal room with a mezzanine and 40 foot high dome ceiling. A place I'd love to work, even if half your job is escorting people in and out. Which is probably why the BNA has the handy card swipes.

Okay, really watching tv now.

london, computer idiocy
