happy family news

I didn't want to mention it in case I jinxed it, but my dad had surgery yesterday on his good eye to try again to lower the pressure in it.

Backstory: Dad was diagnosed with glaucoma at age 35, incredibly young for it. He was also diagnosed late so he lost a lot of his peripheral vision before they caught it. Along with a detached retina in his left eye during his college years and just overall bad eyesight, he's always feared he would go blind. Fifteen years ago he had cataract surgery which returned his right (good) eye to nearly 20/20 and even restored some vision in his basically blind left eye. He's managed the glaucoma with eye drops since 1977 but over the last year the pressure has risen. Sometime over the summer he had laser surgery on both eyes and it worked on the bad eye, but not the good. Intense medication also didn't work on the good eye. So he had to have real surgery.

Anyway, he just left the doctor's for a followup and the surgery worked! His pressure is 10. That's quite low. Mine is normally around 14. So he doesn't have to take the eye drops in his good eye anymore! At least for now. I don't know if this cured him or what, but yay!!!

Last night I broke out the winter coat. I thought it was going to be in the 50s yesterday so I wore a new sweater, skirt and open toed pumps. I only have to walk from parking behind the building into the building so I figured I'd be fine. Naturally I was barely at work when the phone rang and Division 4 needed a court file back by 9:30. I was the only one in the office, so I tromped across the street in heels and just a sweater in the 40 degree weather with high winds. Lovely.

So for choir practice last night I ditched the pumps for flats and found my coat and scarf.

Today it's supposed to be in the 50s, ditto tomorrow, and 70s with thunderstorms on Saturday before back in the 40s on Sunday. Typical confused ass Kansas weather.

So far the prediction for Black Friday in the Chicago area is 40s and partly sunny. No snow in the forecast, thank the gods and please keep it that way. I don't want to take my coat on a plane so I plan to just wear a heavy cardigan.

There are some pre-black Friday sales and open houses here this weekend so I think I'll do some early Christmas shopping on Saturday when I can run around in a t-shirt and tennies. KU's going to lose anyway, though I'll record the football game just in case. I usually go with my mom but she has church stuff in the afternoon, though we plan to go to the Topiary Tree open house in the morning. To be honest, while I love shopping with her, she can't walk very far and tires easily and this way I can hit some of the shops on the sidestreets we never get to. Our downtown shopping area is four blocks long and up a slight hill. I think I'll have my favorite brocoli noodle dish at Zen Zero.

Finally, if you haven't filled out the holiday card poll, go here please! I love sending cards; don't need to get ones back, though that's lovely, of course.

ETA I'll send cards anywhere in the world. :)

holiday shopping, stupid weather, family
