moving glitches

So, the office moved a week ago today. We still have no phones.

No, that's not quite accurate. We have a phone sitting on a chair in the conference room just outside my office. It's on the chair since I've jerry rigged it to my computer to try to get the internet working. Of course I tried to input the IP/gateway/subnet numbers into the wrong place on my computer yesterday so it didn't work. Somehow today I managed to put them in the right place AND change one of the IP numbers just by guessing that it was our "host" number and it worked.

So, I have internet (which was good because yesterday I was answering work emails on my personal cell phone) and can avoid eye strain from reading fic on my phone but no one else does and no one else has a phone yet. Well, I have a phone as long as none of the other attorneys in the building need the conference room, like yesterday when I had to unplug for two hours so they didn't have my phone cord stretched across the table and it ringing and me having to interrupt their meeting which I could hear every word of even though the doors were closed.

I talked to the tech who came by after hours yesterday to assess the situation and they'll be back after hours today.

There's no power to the ports (phone jacks in the walls). This is quite obvious. I knew this last FRIDAY (and I let our landlord, coming back from Italy tonight finally, know)! I hope this tech can fix it without having to get an electrician in here (or is an electrician). There's no problem with the internet once the jacks are working (well, if you're not a techno idiot like me and try to put the numbers into the wrong place--I'm still shocked I managed to 1) figure out the info from the phone network could be used on the computer and 2) figure out the host number needed to go into the IP address number as the fourth section).

Then we have to figure out the phones. So far I've been able to answer one line and put it on hold. I have no clue how to let the person called know they have a phone call outside of yelling across the room. I also have no clue if these will roll over--as our old phones, so if someone was on line one, the second line would ring even if someone had called the first line's number. I think I have the voicemail set up. I need to remember to call it tonight and leave a message as a test.

Even though I personally gave up landlines four years ago, I think I still prefer the old 'phone company flips a switch, you stick phone in wall, voila' method.

The phones finally did shut off at the old office, which means other attorney finally moved over here. He's not happy he can't access the 'net as that's where he does all his billing, so he went home for his laptop. We have wireless in the conference room. It sometimes reaches my desk just inside the office...sometimes.

Boss is in trial all day today or he'd be bitching constantly. He's really not happy about the situation. Me, I can get online and update WW and read fanfic and type out stuff like this, so I'm not so fussed, though I don't like it when others aren't happy.

And it's good for me to have to get up and go answer the phone every time it rings.

Oh, and I will answer those questions from that meme--probably tomorrow as I have pedicure, grocery shopping, quick dinner and choir practice tonight before I'll be able to even get online.

And I actually have work to do, so...

stupid technology, stupid work
