On this beautiful autumn day I have read the
Canticle of the Sun by
St. Francis of Assisi. It is a song in which Francis thanks God for all the different elements of creation. When it was written, no one had to care about the
environment, as we need to do now. Francis did, by thanking God for the gifts each element gives. What is so special about this song is that he speaks of the particles of creation as our equals. He talks about them as "brothers" and "sisters". What most stood out to me today is the part about the sun, because the sun is still comfortable warm, although it is half October.
Glory to you, my Lord, for all Your creatures
Especially our brother, the sun,
Who is the day, and by whom you give us light:
He is beautiful and radiant with great splendor
And bears witness to You, most high One.
St. Francis of Assisi
At this time in my life, being so busy it feels that I feel like burnt by the sun as an image of my active, radiant side, my question is: Why should I thank God for the sun?
The answer that I received is the King of Coins (Pentacles) from the Fantastic Menagerie Tarot, the deck I picked to work with from a bunch of deck-titles. The King of Coins is responsible, reliable and takes care of his household. That is just as the sun. It is always there, shining, taking care for yet another day of life. That is something to thank God for.
On the card we see an animal that enjoys the sun, presumably after business well taken care of; the King of Coins is accomplished in work and business. It is not the burning sun we meet here as I meet right now in my life. If the sun was burning, the King would have demanded some shade, because he loves his comfort. The bothering flies are already waved away. The card highlights the comforting warmth that the sun can give, in which you can sit and be grateful for things done. That is something the sun gives us too, the invitation to sit and enjoy its warmth after work well done. Yet another characteristic of the sun to give thanks for.
