Ehh... It's actually not that big deal. I was thoroughly amused and laughed my way through the entire incident.

Ah, okay. :) I was just worried that some cam-drahmah-bomb went off again and I was going to get caught in the crossfire. You never know these days. :P

The short version: the new owners of LJ, a Russian company called SUP, are no longer allowing creation of the basic (free) accounts. If you have one or if you let your paid account lapse, the change doesn't affect your basic account. You just can't make new ones. This change wasn't widely announced.

Secondly, on the "most popular interests page," certain interests--mostly related to fandom--were not on the list. Some people believed the new owners were trying to censor fans. (This has since been corrected.)

So, in order to express their displeasure with the new policies, people participated in a one-day boycott on Friday.

Apparently what has happened is that some folks are giving people who didn't support the boycott a hard time. The whole "if you're not with us, you're against us" thing.

My icon kind of sums up the whole thing. :)

That makes more sense, though I am upset now that we can't create the free accounts. I mean, I paid for two of mine, just to support the site and all that. Now we're all going to have to move to Myspace or some crap like that.

::Cries::

I liked LJ because of the small and great communities without a lot of flash, ya know?

It's not that you can't have a "free" account. It's just either a free account that does ads, or a paid account. No more basic no-pay, no-ad account.

There were three main concerns, and I see two have already been mentioned ( ... )

You weren't rambling, hon. You actually have very valid points. Now that I know that they aren't cutting down on the free accounts, I feel a bit better. :) We'll have to see how these things go before I start to shell out X amount of money for the various accounts that I have.

Nod. I've had a plus account for awhile, because I wanted a free journal, but extra usericons, so I'm kind of used to the ads by now. I can understand why some people might not like them, but there are lots of great alternatives (that admittedly have far fewer users) that are still free, so while I understand the purpose behind the boycott (making people's voices heard) it just seems like it didn't really do much - and I don't know anyone who really expected it to.

The good news though is that there are lots of LJ client programs that make it very easy to backup all of one's entries and move them to another journal service, for those who do want to leave. And it actually has made some people finally get around to backing up their journal - even if they aren't moving, they're now using the program to always post here AND in the other place, so there's always a backup, and they don't have to worry about losing any creative things they've written over the years. :)

I'm so getting that vibe (about the strike and the missing-hanging-out-with-you part ::Grins::)! Hopefully once I get over the plague, and the semester stops eating both of us alive, we can get together. Having sushi was really fun out in Merritt Island.

We should do it again. Maybe an end of semester party?
