A/N: I know this is a little different than the regular Janto I produce but I was in a funny mood while writing this. Not sure if it works but the itch is scratched.
“Sir we have a problem.”
Jack sighed at the monitor screen. “I didn’t think we would ever see her again. I’ll go deal with it.”
Ianto placed a firm hand on Jack’s shoulder to prevent him from leaving. “I’m the guard dog aren’t I? I’ll go.”
Jack relented and felt slightly guilty at the relief running through his veins. He had run out of carefully worded explanations and comforting touches. His spark had damped - Ianto understood.
Ianto kissed Jack’s forehead and headed for the tourist office. It had been closed for the past 7 weeks; there just wasn’t enough manpower to staff it anymore. The worn-out locks protested but still ground open with a bit of force.
“For a tourist office you aren’t very welcoming are you?” The woman on the other side of the door smirked sarcastically.
“Diane what are you doing here?” Ianto asked, still unsure how the pilot had managed to make it back.
“I won’t even give you a guess on that one. Where is he?” Diane tried to peer around Ianto’s shoulder but the Welshman shifted, blocking her vision.
“It’s too late,” Ianto said trying to sound neutral though he felt his muscles tremble.
“Get out of my way! I want to see him.” Diane pushed but the man’s footing was firm.
“You can’t. Please leave before I have to use force.”
“I did not spend all of this time trying to come back to him to be told to leave. Now either you can move your tailored ass out of the way or I will not hesitate to make you move.” Diane hissed.
“It’s too late,” Ianto repeated, finally crumbling. “He’s not here to come back to… He’s dead Diane.”
“No he can’t be.” Diane grabbed at Ianto’s arms in desperation. “He’s the only person I’ve ever wanted to come back for. He can’t be gone.”
“We maybe you shouldn’t have left in the first place.” Ianto knew it was cruel but she didn’t have to see Owen slowly fall apart and not let anyone put him back together. She didn’t have to see his pain again when he got over her to miss Tosh by a well-aimed bullet. She did not deserve Owen alive, semi-dead, or even dead. “Please just go.”
Diane released his arms slowly and stepped back into the fading day. “I really love him,” She murmured softly.
“I believe you.” The statement wasn’t mean to be consoling or understanding just a confirmation of what she believed to be fact. “Do you need any currency or documents?”
“I still have everything you gave me last time. Thanks for not sugar coating it.” Diane leaned in and kissed him on the cheek. Her lips were wind chapped and left a red smudge.
“If you need anything you know where to find us,” Ianto offered out of politeness.
“I think I’ve taken my fair share already.” And she had, more than she would ever understand.
