My mom, the closet Harry Potter fan

Jul 19, 2007 11:07

Just had the funniest conversation with my mom as she called to talk about something else. (Bear in mind, my mother does not particularly care about Harry Potter. She has nothing against it per se, other than that it's that "fantasy crap" she can't understand my and Liza's passion for; she's just not interested. At all.)

Mom: So what's new with you?
Me: Not much...*teasing* The new Harry Potter book is out in less than 48 hours, that's exciting.
Mom: Oh, yeah, I can't wait.
Me: I know, you'll be first in line.
Mom: How'd you guess?
Me: I know you're a closet fan.
Mom: I don't know if I can wait 48 hours.
Me: You can always go online and find the spoilers. Somebody got an advance copy and leaked the secrets.
Mom: Oh, yeah, Snopes or Snipes or whoever does something...?
Me: Snape.
Mom: Yeah, him. Now, is this the movie that just came out?
Me: No, the movie was for book five. This is book seven, the last one in the series.
Mom: Eh, it'll be like Die Hard, there'll be another one in ten years.
Me: They say Harry might die in this book.
Mom: Why would he die?
Me: I don't know, but it's one of the big theories.
Mom: I don't think he's going to die.
Me: Someone posted a fake interview with the author, in which she claimed that Harry's best friend Ron is a figment of his imagination, and his girlfriend's a robot.
Mom: I think he's going to wake up and find out that it was all a dream.
Me: What, like the Newhart show? That'd be the biggest ripoff in literary history!
Mom: Seriously. It's all going to have been a dream. And then he's going to get a job and have an office and knock off the witchywhatsis and lead a normal life.

My mother may not understand me all the time, but she sure knows how to make me laugh.
